Spreading the net

networkingIt’s often said that it’s not what you know, but who you know… And sometimes more to the point, especially in business, who knows you!

Let’s face it, where would we be without our different networks? Formal or informal, physical or virtual, professional or personal – we rely on them all in one way or another…

On this week’s show, the Girls Around Town take a look at networking in Newark, with guest Portia Green joining June and Sue to explore some of the options available in and around the town.

As marketing co-ordinator for 4Networking Newark, Portia will also be talking about how its fortnightly meetings support and motivate local businessmen and women and the organisation’s national celebration of its 10th birthday this month.

Tune in or listen online from 10am to 12 noon for the discussion, as well as all the usual GAT gossip, news and music to ease you through another Sunday morning…

Celebrating life events

sarah willisPlanning a funeral may sound like a strange choice of subject for the Girls Around Town but, as this week’s guest Sarah Willis explains, a civil ceremony is first and foremost a celebration of the life of the person who has died.

As a member of the Institute of Civil Funerals (IoCF), Sarah has conducted literally hundreds of these ceremonies since she became a civil celebrant in 2007.

Described by the IoCF as funerals “driven by the wishes, beliefs and values of the deceased and their family, not by the beliefs or ideology of the person conducting the funeral”, they sit between a religious service and a humanist funeral.

It’s Sarah’s job to help the family plan the ceremony and work with them to choose the music, readings, poems and even slideshows. “At the heart of it all is a written tribute to the person who has died, telling the story of their life and celebrating their character, beliefs and achievements,” she says. “So a civil celebrant needs to be a good writer and storyteller, able to speak well in public and above all to be a good people-person.”

Sarah is also called upon to help celebrate other life events, such as naming ceremonies and renewals of vows – to find out more, tune in or listen online when Sarah joins June, Tina and Sue between 10am and 12 noon on Sunday…

Change your change!

change your change - cropIt’s a hot topic – in more ways than one! – among women over 40 so it’s hardly surprising that the Girls Around Town will be turning the spotlight on the menopause as part of their new Fabulous After 40 series of interviews.

One of the guests lined up to take part in the discussions is complementary therapist Sue Mcfarlane. Watch this space for details of other guests involved and when they’ll be in the studio but, in the meantime, here’s news of an event coming up that could answer some of your questions and concerns.

On Saturday 27 February, Sue will be joining forces with mind coach and hypnotherapist Louise Page to present a two-hour holistic health workshop aimed at helping you to cope with the physical and emotional symptoms of menopause.

“You don’t need to be in the change for this to be relevant,” says Sue. “It’s never, ever too early to prepare.”

The workshop takes place from 10am to 12 noon at Earthchild, 67 Long Acre, Bingham NG13 8AG. Places are £15 each and strictly limited so advance booking is essential.

For more details and to reserve your place, call Sue on 07766 592025 or Earthchild on 01949 876062.
