Balancing act

Three months ago, Claire Clements joined the Girls Around Town with details of the Positively Empowering Kids Festival, a brand new event which took place at Nottingham Racecourse at the end of June.

This weekend she’ll be back in the studio to talk about some of the highlights of the day and remind listeners of the other ways she helps youngsters build their confidence and self-esteem by encouraging them to put on their Positive Pants.

But it’s not just about kids this time, because Louise Hallam of Still Calm will be with her and the main focus of their chat with June will be on the grown ups…

With several strings to her bow, Claire knows all about the importance of balance and she’ll be describing how, using visualisation techniques, meditation and creativity, she can help you, your staff and your business become the best they can.

Techniques that, earlier this week, she shared with members of the Nottinghamshire WiRE networking group here in Newark, giving them an insight into what Blissful Balance means to her and to those who take part in the wellbeing and empowerment activities she organises.

Claire and Louise will have news too of another upcoming event, when they’ll be joining forces with Donna Smith and Amy Huskisson to present Wellbeing in Nottingham at Jury’s Inn on Monday 30 September.

Tune in to 107.8FM or listen online between 10am and 12 noon on Sunday to find out what’s in store for this one, how Claire and Louise achieve their own blissful balance and how, with their help, you could achieve yours too!

Let’s get sewcial!

Fancy trying your hand at crochet or quilting? Perhaps you’d like to make your own bauble wreath for Christmas, give calligraphy a go or you’re looking for an after-school club for the kids?

It’s all about getting creative in the second hour of the show this weekend, when Crafty Betty‘s Michelle Baker joins June and Rachel to talk about some of the different ways you can do just that right here in Newark.

With events and activities for all ages and abilities, Michelle and her crafty colleagues have plenty of fun ideas for the whole family to enjoy.

She’ll be describing some of the highlights of the year so far as well, from a road trip to the NEC for The Festival of Quilts to a day of non-stop sewing last month as part of the North Notts Sew Day in aid of Quilts for Care Leavers.

Tune in to 107.8FM or listen online from 10.45am to hear what’s on offer over the coming weeks and months.

If you feel like getting sewcial, Michelle and the Girls Around Town might have just what you’re looking for…

A different kind of departure lounge

Since the first one opened its doors in September 2011, more than 9,000 death cafés have been held in 65 countries across EuropeNorth America and Australasia.

Now this global social enterprise, which offers people the chance to talk about life and death over tea and cake, is heading this way…

The Newark meetings will be known as the Departure Lounge  – a particularly appropriate choice given the fact that they’ll take place at Carriages Café on Platform 1 of Newark Castle Station – and are being held on the first Tuesday of every month, starting with the launch on Tuesday 3 September.

Facilitator Hilary Wellington, who has been passionate about supporting people through death, dying and bereavement all her life, will be joining the Girls Around Town next weekend to share a few more details of what’s in store.

“Although there’s an organiser to start conversations, there are no leaders nor do we have a set philosophy or agenda,” she explained. “Everyone’s views are accepted and respected and much can be learned by coming together in a safe place to share cultural beliefs or traditions around death.”

The monthly meetings run from 2.30pm to 4.30pm, there’s no need to book and entry is free although the organisers do ask that participants buy something to eat and drink from the tempting menu at Carriages.

Tune in or listen online from 10am next Sunday when Hilary will be chatting to June and Rosalyn about  the Departure Lounge’s aim to increase awareness of death to help people make the most of their (finite) lives…
