Falling in love with fashion

Hopefully there’s still a little time left to enjoy the last few weeks of summer but even so it’s probably not too early to start looking ahead to autumn.

And if in your case that means thinking about shopping for new outfits, Ann Hayes from Ann et Vin and Lucky Secret Boutique‘s Sue Allen will be in the studio next weekend with news of something which will definitely be right up your street…

The street in question is Castlegate in Newark, the ‘something’ is an Autumn Fashion Show and, given the fact that it’s being hosted by Ann et Vin, you won’t be surprised to learn that there’ll be fizz as well as fashion on Thursday 12 September!

From 6.30pm to 9.30pm, local businesses will be joining forces to raise funds for Beaumond House Community Hospice in an evening which features new autumn ranges from Lucky Secret Boutique alongside handbags, lingerie, jewellery, scarves, shoes, make up and more.

Bra-vo!

When Janice Holmes popped into the studio at the beginning of June to launch her Bring Out Your Bras! appeal, the Girls Around Town were confident she’d have plenty of support from the ladies of Newark and beyond…

But who could have imagined that, two months on, a staggering 8,000-plus bras are now in a container that will shortly be heading out to Gambia to await her arrival there in November?

And that ‘beyond’ wouldn’t just mean across Nottinghamshire and the UK but all the way to Australia?!

Still reeling from the response, Janice will be back on the show next weekend to describe the impact the venture will have on the lives of all the Gambian girls and women who will soon be wearing their first ever bras.

Joining her next Sunday will be Sylvia Morgan, founder of the New Life Children’s Centres charity. She’ll be giving June an insight into the work it does, providing a future for more than 1,300 children by giving them access to free education and health care and offering outreach programmes to the local communities for hundreds more children and families.

One thing’s for sure, there’ll be a huge ‘thank you’ in there somewhere from them both to everyone whose generosity has made this appeal such a resounding success.

In conversation with Billy Ivory

Born in Southwell and known as one of Britain’s leading TV and theatre writers, Billy Ivory returns to his home county next month to entertain guests at Castle House in Newark, the new home of Newark & Sherwood District Council.

Presented by The Wolfit Foundation, In Conversation With Billy Ivory takes place on Sunday 8 September when he will be talking about his career and some of his best known work, which includes Common as Muck, Made in Dagenham, Chef, Boon, The Invisibles and A Thing Called Love.

His TV credits include episodes of All Creatures Great and Small, Emmerdale and Coronation Street, while viewers may also have seen the recent programme he wrote about local skating stars Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean.

Tickets for the event, which starts at 3pm, are on sale now, priced £12 each and including afternoon tea.
