United against violence against women

On last weekend’s show, you’ll no doubt have heard June talking about the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, which took place on  Wednesday 25 November.

Since that date, 16 days of action have been taking place, one of which will be held right here in Newark next week.

Commemorating the 108 women killed by men in the UK since 25 November 2019, 108 pairs of women’s shoes will go on display in the Market Place at 8am on Wednesday 9 December. The names of those women, who can no longer see the sunrise or be there for their families and friends, will be read out and the event will of course be captured in photographs.

If you’d like to help mark this, it’s not too late to donate a pair of women’s shoes which, after the event, will either be given to a local charity or returned to the donor.

All you need to do is drop off the shoes at Carriages Café between 9am and 6pm on Friday 4 December – if you want your shoes returned, just make sure they are clearly marked with your name on stickers on the soles.

Swap till you drop

IMPORTANT UPDATE – TUESDAY 17 MARCH

This event has now been postponed until later in the year – watch this space for further updates as they become available….

Did you know that nearly two-thirds of women have unworn clothes languishing in their wardrobes?

Or that a survey carried out last summer estimated that in 2019 British shoppers would on average buy 28 items of clothing but only wear just over half of them?

And that doesn’t take into account all the clothes they buy that are worn a few times and then. for whatever reason, are destined never to see the light of day again.

As March draws to a close, you’re probably already thinking about spring cleaning – it’s time to clear out the clutter and those wardrobes are as good a place as any to make a start.

Especially if giving them a good decluttering not only offers you the chance to swap what you don’t want for something that you do but raises much-needed money for local charities into the bargain…

Well, here’s how you can do just that – instead of shopping till you drop, why not swap till you drop?!

It’s known as swishing and if you want a chance to give it a go, the place to head for on Saturday 21 March is Newark Golf Club, where SWISH 2020 will be open from 12 noon to 3pm.

Admission is just £10 per person, payable by making your donation here, and all proceeds from the event will be donated to Beaumond House Community HospiceThe Children’s Bereavement Centre and the British Heart Foundation.

Just bring along your good quality clothes, shoes and accessories on the day, making sure your name’s on them so the organisers know you’ve already paid the entry fee.

Then get ready to do your purse – not to mention the planet and the three charities – a favour while injecting a little new life into your wardrobe…

Don’t shop, swap!

Swishing – a frock-swapping event that’s a fun and frugal way to pick up some new clothes and accessories but is also ethically and environmentally sound too

Falling in love with fashion

Hopefully there’s still a little time left to enjoy the last few weeks of summer but even so it’s probably not too early to start looking ahead to autumn.

And if in your case that means thinking about shopping for new outfits, Ann Hayes from Ann et Vin and Lucky Secret Boutique‘s Sue Allen will be in the studio next weekend with news of something which will definitely be right up your street…

The street in question is Castlegate in Newark, the ‘something’ is an Autumn Fashion Show and, given the fact that it’s being hosted by Ann et Vin, you won’t be surprised to learn that there’ll be fizz as well as fashion on Thursday 12 September!

From 6.30pm to 9.30pm, local businesses will be joining forces to raise funds for Beaumond House Community Hospice in an evening which features new autumn ranges from Lucky Secret Boutique alongside handbags, lingerie, jewellery, scarves, shoes, make up and more.

Tickets are on sale now, priced £15 each which includes a glass of Prosecco on arrival and nibbles during the interval. To book your seat by the catwalk, visit Lucky Secret Boutique on Wilson Street or call 01636 919748.

And don’t forget to tune in to 107.8FM or listen online from 11am next Sunday when Ann and Sue will be sharing more details of the event with the Girls Around Town.

They’ll be chatting to June, who already has her ticket for the show – but then what else would you expect from a self-confessed shopaholic?!
