Spilling the beans

Do you remember the Swinging Sixties? Maybe not – but perhaps you’re still a fan of Sixties music?

Either way, the name Frank Ifield is sure to strike a chord – the first UK-based pop star to have three consecutive number one hits, beginning with I Remember You in July 1962 which was also the first disc to sell a million copies in the UK alone…

This weekend, ex-showbiz journalist Graham Keal returns to Girls Around Town to explain why and how he made it his mission to bring one of his own 60s idols to Newark on Tuesday 22 May.

“As a pop-mad 12-year old back then, Frank was a huge star to me,” says Graham. “And he still was when I interviewed him 20 years later during my time as TV editor of the Northants Evening Telegraph.

“When I saw on his website that his 2018 UK tour didn’t include any dates in the East Midlands, I contacted his agent and agreed to organise a Frank Ifields Spills The Beans dinner if a suitable venue could be found.”

Graham will be in the studio on Sunday to describe how he set the search in motion and just what’s in store for the 40 diners at Carriages Café, where Frank will be ‘spilling the beans’ about lots of behind-the-scenes stories from the Swinging Sixties.

Tune in to 107.8FM or DAB digital radio or listen online between 10am and 12 noon – with a little bit of luck, June might even be able to persuade him to drop one or two hints about some of the tales Frank has to tell!

Handmade with love

Newark’s Royal Market will soon be buzzing on the last Sunday of every month, as local crafters join forces to bring their handmade goodies to town…

With the first Artisan Market taking place from 9.30am to 4pm on Sunday 25 March, organisers Louise Clark and Melanie Luff will be in the studio with June next weekend to talk about the treasure trove of treats in store for visitors in the months to come.

They’ll be taking a look back at some of the Craft Markets held last year and describing how, with the support of Newark Town Council, they’re building on their success to make events like these a regular feature in the town centre.

There’ll be news too of the Spring Extravaganza for Jake’s American Dream, held at Stoke Rochford Hall on Sunday 4 March, and of the special two-day Artisan Fayre over the Bank Holiday weekend of Sunday 27 and Monday 28 May.

Tune in on 107.8fm or on DAB digital radio or listen online to Girls Around Town between 10am and 12 noon next Sunday to find out more.

And if you’re looking for something a little bit different to enjoy, don’t forget to put the last Sunday of every month in your diary!

Stay tuned – we’ll be back soon!

If you were listening in last Sunday, you’ll already know about this but just in case you missed it…

There’s good news and bad news – the bad news is that the Girls Around Town are hanging up their headphones for a little while but there’s good news too – your favourite Sunday morning show will be back before you know it!!

Good luck to Tina, who’s leaving the show to concentrate on BELOVED@THEBARN, her new business in Southwell. And a big ‘thank you’ to Phil who’ll be keeping those headphones warm for us while we’re away with his Sunday Breakfast Show from 8am till 12 noon – we promise to reward him with cake when we return…

In the meantime, we’re already making plans for GAT#2, lining up lots of great guests and working on at least one regular new feature. Keep an eye on our Facebook page for updates and watch out too for news of what we’ve got in mind for the relaunch – the details are still under wraps for now but we promise there’ll be something a little bit special about the first show.

And as you’d expect, there’ll probably be cake involved as well!

Until then, if you’re missing your Sunday mornings with Radio Newark’s answer to Loose Women and Woman’s Hour, don’t forget that you can always listen again to the podcasts featuring some of the awesome guests who’ve joined us in the studio over the past year…

We’ll still be sharing stories about what’s going on in and around Newark over the next few months so let us know if you have events and activities you’d like us to feature here.

And if you have an interesting story to tell or you’re an expert in a field you think would be of interest to GAT listeners, why not get in touch to add your name to the guest list for next year? Just email june@girlsaroundtownonline.com – we’d love to hear from you!

Have a happy Christmas and a great New Year – keep warm this winter and we’ll see you next spring!!
