Walk this way

If you’ve ever wondered what Nordic Walking‘s all about, here’s your chance to find out – and if you live in or near Newark and fancy giving it a go, here’s how you can!

Deb Watts joins June and Claire in the second hour of this weekend’s show to talk about the benefits of this total body version of walking that can be enjoyed both by non-athletes as a health-promoting physical activity and by athletes as a sport.

She’ll have details too of her Newark Nordics group whose members enjoy  workouts with a difference in the beautiful surroundings of Fernwood, Balderton Lakes and other local areas.

And that’s not all – if you’ve lost your zest for life and want to get back on the right track, make sure you tune in to 107.8FM or listen online from 11am on Sunday to hear what Deb has to tell the Girls Around Town about Teepee Life.

She’ll be describing how events such as the one taking place in Brighton this very week help participants get ready to embrace life again by finding the fulfillment and happiness that’s key to the zing…

Two for the price of one

Listen to the show next weekend and get two for the price of one when guests Andy Tudbury and Paula Drakeford join the Girls Around Town in the studio…

First up it’s Andy, organiser of The Belvoir Flower and Garden Festival which takes place on Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 July.

Set in the castle’s stunning grounds, this brand new event brings together a range of show gardens from award-winning designers, a host of well-known nursery and floral exhibitors in the grand Lakeside Pavilion, a Gardeners’ Question Time panel and an educational area.

With a varied programme of live music from local performers in the Music Zone, everything from Prosecco and quality coffee to artisan cakes and burgers from a master butcher in the Nourish Zone and a wide range of trade stands brimming with garden products, sculptures and gifts, it’s guaranteed to be a great day out for all the family filled with floral inspiration and gardening ideas to take home.

In the second hour of the show, zumba and yoga teacher Paula Drakeford takes centre stage to talk about the classes she runs in the beautiful Ballroom of Upton Hall.

She’ll be explaining some of the benefits of the sessions – from building confidence and releasing stress to improving stamina and gaining fitness – with a little help from Helen Law, who’ll be sharing her own reasons for joining both classes and just what she’s gained from them.

Whether you’re thinking of trying zumba or yoga – or both! – this is your chance to find out what to expect from each of them. There’ll be advance details too of a new and unique dance class Paula will be bringing to Upton soon –  if you’ve always wanted the confidence to strut out in style, Strutology could be just what you’ve been waiting for…

Tune in or listen online when June and Rachel strut their own stuff from 10am to 12 noon  next Sunday

These girls can – can you?

This_Girl_Can_Logo_PMS_248We’re loving the ad promoting This Girl Can, the national Sport England campaign celebrating active women who are doing their thing no matter how well they do it – and letting nothing (not even sweat!) stand in their way.

Designed to inspire women to wiggle, jiggle, move and prove that judgement is a barrier that can be overcome, the initiative has been gathering support from individuals and clubs across the country and beyond since the ad first appeared on TV a few days ago.

good things come 2It’s aimed at encouraging women of all ages and abilities, shapes and sizes into sport or exercise, showcasing ‘real’ women to demonstrate that, although fear of judgement is stopping many of us from taking part in exercise, it really doesn’t have to.

And with “Sweating like a pig, feeling like a fox” and “I kick balls, deal with it” among the hard-hitting lines used, the campaign certainly doesn’t pull any punches(!) in its approach…

you don't have to go fastDefinitely an initiative and a topic the Girls Around Town will be exploring on the show when we’re back on air – well, what else would you expect when one of us is the updisputed Deadlift Queen of a leading Newark gym?!

And we’ll be inviting you to contribute to the discussion by sharing your own stories on air and on our Facebook page, so watch this space.

In the meantime, you can find out more about This Girl Can and how to get involved here.

If you haven’t already seen the ad, take a look now – it’s guaranteed to make you giggle. And if it doesn’t inspire you to wiggle, jiggle and ‘get your freak on’, then nothing will!
