This way for a fun-filled weekend!

Fancy a bit of fun later this week?

If you live in or around Newark, there’ll be plenty to choose from when the national Fun Palace comes to town!

Cast your mind back to late August and you’ll probably remember Donna Hall’s interview on Girls Around Town, when she shared some of the details of this brand new event…

And now it’s just around the corner, with a whole host of activities taking place between Friday 1 and Sunday 3 October.

Joining June on this Sunday’s show will be former co-presenter Tina Bettison, who’ll be ringing the studio just after 11.20am with a quick update from the Market Place, one of the venues where you’ll find lots of local people, organisations and businesses offering free activities for all the family throughout the weekend.

Don’t forget to Put On Your Sunday Best as usual this weekend to hear what Tina has to say – just tune to 107.8FM, listen online, on the apps or on Alexa…

But in the meantime, whether you’re looking for a bit of a Knit and Natter, want to play traditional games in the courtyard of The National Civil War Centre, try your hand at the ukelele, meet local artists and create a textured tile to add to a collective canvas painting at The Secret Garden or just wander through the Market Place exploring the various stands and stalls, make sure you put those dates in your diary.

And keep an eye out on Sunday afternoon for June, who’ll be heading into town as soon as the show’s over to catch up with Tina in person and try out a few of those activities herself!

From finding your inner balance to stem cell extraction on this weekend’s Sunday Best!

Two familiar voices on this weekend’s show, when Rosalyn Palmer and Susi Wright are on Girls Around Town

Or, to be more precise, better make that three because they’ll be chatting to June of course!

On the phone to the studio from just after 10.20am, Ros will no doubt have a quick update about life on the farm over in Lincolnshire.

Then, on a more serious note, she’ll be sharing the secret to inner alignment, something she’s discovered herself over the years – how to find the right balance between constantly pushing and challenging yourself and listening instead to your inner soul sometimes, doing something much more nurturing.

That secret lies at the midpoint of a line between the two axes of ‘Just do it!‘ and ‘Just be!‘ says Ros and she’ll be explaining how, as a coach and therapist, this is one of the things she helps her clients do.

In the second hour of the show, it’s Susi’s turn to step up to the mic when she’s in the studio for a face-to-face catch-up with June.

More lighthearted chat to begin with – if you’re a dog owner, some surprising information about what they’re calling Barking Mad will be among the topics on their agenda.

Then, again on a slightly more serious note, Susi will be talking about working in PR and marketing for a stem cell bank and a children’s book called Nothing But The Tooth she wrote at the time.

Whether you’re struggling to find your inner balance, interested in finding out more about stem cell extraction from children’s naturally shed milk teeth or looking for a truly over-the-top Christmas pressie for your precious pooch…

Make sure you’re tuned to 107.8FM, listening on the apps, on Alexa or online between 10am and 12 noon for all this and more when you Put On Your Sunday Best this weekend!

Boxing clever

More than 20 years have passed since Dean Sugden, himself a former World Champion kickboxer, first opened the doors of Suggy’s Gym in Newark.

And for almost 10 of those years, June – aka the oldest deadlifter in town – has been there in the red and black room of pain three times a week for her personal training sessions with none other than The Boss himself!

Although she’s never walked out into the ring herself, other than to present trophies at a few fight nights, there are plenty who have – kickboxers and boxers, professional and amateur, all flying the flag for Newark both at home and abroad.

Now she can’t wait to get her own back on Dean for all that suffering when they go head to head in the studio in the second hour of this weekend’s Girls Around Town, talking about those two decades of fitness and fighting on Castlegate, how he and his team have adapted things over there during and after lockdowns…

And how it’s not just about professional fighters although, as you’ll hear, he manages and coaches a fair few of them!

If you think boxing, kickboxing, weight training and working out are just for boys and blokes, think again – there are plenty of lasses and ladies giving it their all during the different training sessions and a few female rising stars on the fighting front too, not least among them the second guest joining in the chat, young boxer Megan Williams.

Make sure you’re tuned in to 107.8FM or listening on the apps, on Alexa or online from just after 11am – gym gear and/or boxing gloves are optional of course, just Put On Your Sunday Best to hear what Dean and Megan have to say about what’s on the cards for them and everyone else in the coming weeks and months.

And don’t forget that this Sunday also sees the welcome return of the Newark Dragon Boat Festival

Among the Radio Newark team joining in the fun down there at Riverside Park will be Chris Bevans, who’ll be on the phone to the studio from just after 10.20am to share a quick bird’s eye view of how things are going as it all starts to kick off.
