This way for a fun-filled weekend!

Fancy a bit of fun later this week?

If you live in or around Newark, there’ll be plenty to choose from when the national Fun Palace comes to town!

Cast your mind back to late August and you’ll probably remember Donna Hall’s interview on Girls Around Town, when she shared some of the details of this brand new event…

And now it’s just around the corner, with a whole host of activities taking place between Friday 1 and Sunday 3 October.

Joining June on this Sunday’s show will be former co-presenter Tina Bettison, who’ll be ringing the studio just after 11.20am with a quick update from the Market Place, one of the venues where you’ll find lots of local people, organisations and businesses offering free activities for all the family throughout the weekend.

Don’t forget to Put On Your Sunday Best as usual this weekend to hear what Tina has to say – just tune to 107.8FM, listen online, on the apps or on Alexa…

But in the meantime, whether you’re looking for a bit of a Knit and Natter, want to play traditional games in the courtyard of The National Civil War Centre, try your hand at the ukelele, meet local artists and create a textured tile to add to a collective canvas painting at The Secret Garden or just wander through the Market Place exploring the various stands and stalls, make sure you put those dates in your diary.

And keep an eye out on Sunday afternoon for June, who’ll be heading into town as soon as the show’s over to catch up with Tina in person and try out a few of those activities herself!

A new chapter for Newark Book Festival

Newark Book Festival is back – which means organiser Sara Bullimore is back too, in the studio for next Sunday‘s show…

Showcasing the world of books through an exciting, engaging programme of events for all the family, the festival returns for the third time over the weekend of Friday 12 to Sunday 14 July. This year, visitors will be invited to explore the theme of Home and Away, from travelling around the world and through your imagination to a celebration of all things home and Nottinghamshire.

Avid readers all, the Girls Around Town will be supporting the Festival as usual but they’ll be going the extra mile this year to present the entire show live from the Market Place. Why not pop by to say hello between 10am and 12 noon on the Sunday and maybe even share some of the things you love about books on air?

In the meantime, tune in or listen online between 10am and 12 noon to join June and Sara for NEXT week’s show, when you’ll find out more about some of the things in store this time round.

One thing’s for sure, if you’re as much into books as June, Rachel and Ros are, you’ll want to put the dates in your diary now and get your hands on a Festival brochure as soon as possible so you can start bookmarking the events you’re going to enjoy…

By the book

The Newark Book Festival returns to town next weekend and once again the Girls Around Town will be reporting live on this local celebration of the very best in literature and the arts.

Eleven venues in and around Newark are taking part in this year’s programme, which features everything from author events to panels, crime and contemporary fiction to history and a range of fun activities for younger visitors.

June and Rachel will be in the studio on Sunday, waiting for the latest news from Rosalyn as she catches up with some of the exhibitors and visitors in the Literature Quarter in the Market Place.

Tune in or listen online from 10am to 12 noon to find out how things went on Friday 13 and Saturday 14 July and, even more importantly, what’s still to come on Sunday 15 July.

In the meantime, you can pick up a brochure in local libraries and other venues in Newark or check out the full programme of events on the Festival website
