Stay tuned – we’ll be back soon!

If you were listening in last Sunday, you’ll already know about this but just in case you missed it…

There’s good news and bad news – the bad news is that the Girls Around Town are hanging up their headphones for a little while but there’s good news too – your favourite Sunday morning show will be back before you know it!!

Good luck to Tina, who’s leaving the show to concentrate on BELOVED@THEBARN, her new business in Southwell. And a big ‘thank you’ to Phil who’ll be keeping those headphones warm for us while we’re away with his Sunday Breakfast Show from 8am till 12 noon – we promise to reward him with cake when we return…

In the meantime, we’re already making plans for GAT#2, lining up lots of great guests and working on at least one regular new feature. Keep an eye on our Facebook page for updates and watch out too for news of what we’ve got in mind for the relaunch – the details are still under wraps for now but we promise there’ll be something a little bit special about the first show.

And as you’d expect, there’ll probably be cake involved as well!

Until then, if you’re missing your Sunday mornings with Radio Newark’s answer to Loose Women and Woman’s Hour, don’t forget that you can always listen again to the podcasts featuring some of the awesome guests who’ve joined us in the studio over the past year…

We’ll still be sharing stories about what’s going on in and around Newark over the next few months so let us know if you have events and activities you’d like us to feature here.

And if you have an interesting story to tell or you’re an expert in a field you think would be of interest to GAT listeners, why not get in touch to add your name to the guest list for next year? Just email june@girlsaroundtownonline.com – we’d love to hear from you!

Have a happy Christmas and a great New Year – keep warm this winter and we’ll see you next spring!!

The Secret Spitfires

In 1940, the Germans succeeded in destroying the Spitfire factories in Southampton, believing that in doing so they’d put an end to the threat from their nemesis. But unknown to them, the British decided to build Spitfires in secret…

With a workforce mainly made up of unskilled young girls, boys, women, elderly men and a handful of engineers, around 2,500 Spitfires were built in cities and rural towns in southern England, hidden in sheds, garages, back gardens, a bus depot and even a hotel.

The story behind this amazing achievement is revealed in a new film, The Secret Spitfires, which has its East Midlands pre-release screening at the National Civil War Centre in Newark on Friday 24 November.

Set against a backdrop of picturesque English countryside, it features tales of terrible sadness along with more joyous moments shared by GIs and the RAF pilots who fly the iconic Spitfires today, a Glen Miller concert and a Joe Louis boxing match.

Concluding with a moving poem written by a Spitfire pilot, read by Vera Lynne, this screening starts at 7pm. Tickets are £10 each and are available online or by calling 07746 576521 – for a taste of what’s in store, watch the film trailer here…

Getting crafty for Christmas

It’s all about crafts and Christmas in the second of this week’s interviews, when Michelle Baker and Sally Harrison join the Girls Around Town to talk about The Bestest, Craftiest Christmas Weekend Ever!

With demonstrations, children’s activities, goodie bags and a gift-wrapping service all on offer throughout the weekend, you’ll find plenty to see and do at the Newark Craft Hub in London Road Car Park on Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 December..

Michelle and Sally will have news too of craft workshops taking place both days. If you fancy sewing a Santa sack, Christmas bunting or a stocking, making a Christmas crystal star with The Bead Queen, a Christmas jumper with The Great British Sewing Bee‘s Tracey Symonds or a felted Santa Claus with Kim from The Tinkering Faeries, they’ve got it covered!

Visit the website to book places on any of the workshops – and tune in or listen online from 11am on Sunday when June and Tina find out more what’s in store…
