From bakes to makes

Two for the price of one again this weekend – as the first guest leaves the studio, another arrives for the second hour of the show…

Ever wondered who’s behind those bold and beautiful menu blackboards in your favourite coffee shop or restaurant? Or tried to find someone to custom-make a sign for a special occasion of your own?

Well, chances are at least some of those blackboards were Made By Mee – aka Marie Elizabeth Edwards, who’ll be talking to June and Rachel about her passion for creating freehand works of art that help make businesses stand out from the crowd.

And describing how her flair for design can add a personal touch to everything from the countdown to holidays and Christmas to weddings, christenings and home decor.

Given that Marie will be chatting to the Girls Around Town on Mothering Sunday, the other news she has to share is particularly appropriate.

As coordinator for the Newark branch of the Mums In Business Association, she’ll be hosting the group’s first event on Thursday 11 April, from 10am to 12 noon at the Roman Way on Lincoln Road.

Tune in or listen online from11am on Sunday to find out more about MIBA, an international community with almost 32,000 members worldwide, and what’s in store for Marie’s fellow MIBs at next month’s launch.

Tickets for the first meeting are already available online – if you’re a busy working mum, this child-friendly networking group could be just what you’ve been looking for!

Pampered to perfection

We all deserve a little bit of ‘me’ time occasionally, don’t we?

And if it comes with shopping and a glass of Pimms too – well, what’s not to love?

When Emma Mayle mentioned an evening with all this and more coming up in Balderton during her interview on the show a couple of weeks ago, June and Rachel immediately spotted a chance for a fun night out.

Not surprisingly, Rosalyn was quick to agree – so it’s Girls Around Town On Tour on Friday 29 March

The Pimms, Shopping and Pamper Evening takes place from 7pm to 9.30pm in St Giles Church Hall (opposite Chesters pub for those of you not too familiar with Balderton) and tickets are just £5 each, with a glass of Pimms included in the price.

But you’ll have to get your skates on if you haven’t got yours yet – advance booking is essential and the deadline is Wednesday 27 March.

With Mothering Sunday and Easter just around the corner, you’ll find plenty of ideas for gifts and treats among the stands with fresh flowers, dream catchers, jewellery and paintings just a few of the goodies on offer.

Add bouquets of sweets from Simply Sweet, garden ornaments, children’s books, music from Adele Woodsford Priestley, a fashion show courtesy of Rocket Retro and a raffle to the mix and it’s safe to say there’ll be something for everyone…

From a pampering perspective, how about a mini manicure, a mini head massage or a chance to check you’re wearing the right size bra and browse through the lovely lingerie sold by Janice Holmes, another recent GAT guest?

All proceeds from the evening will be divided equally between Newark‘s Beaumond House Hospice, St Alice Hospice in Esher and Cancer Research UK. So call or text Lorraine West on 07707 524998 by next Wednesday to get your tickets and support these good causes while having an equally good time.

Oh and there’ll be cake too – in fact, rumour has it there might even be Pimms cupcakes! Need we say more?

Breathing new life into the Buttermarket

If you haven’t visited Newark Buttermarket since the beginning of this month, you’ll be in for a surprise when you do!

From fashion to flowers, cakes to crafts, vintage treats to toys and games – you’ll find all this and more on offer now, in a setting that shoppers are already describing as ‘a little Covent Garden‘.

Find out why and how the change came about when Louise Clark and Jacqui Johnson join June and Rosalyn on Girls Around Town from 11am this Sunday.

They’ll be talking about some of the pop up shops that are bringing new life to the Buttermarket – including their own, of course! And Louise will have news too of future plans and events taking place in and around Newark Market Place throughout the year…

Tune in or listen online to hear what’s in store – and, in the meantime, why not pop down to see for yourself?

With Mothering Sunday only a week away, it’s the perfect place to find just the gift you’re looking for!
