A language more universal than words

Want to do much more with your camera or smartphone than just take selfies and holiday snaps?

Then you’ll want to hear what this week’s guest Gilly Walker has to say about the exciting possibilities photography offers both as a form of self expression and as a meditative or mindful practice…

Photography is a language more universal than words – Minor White

Fine art photographer, philosopher, writer and lover of nature Gilly will be joining the Girls Around Town in the studio to talk about a more thoughtful, intuitive approach to taking pictures, one that is often called contemplative or inner path photography.

“I like to photograph things not for what they are but for what else they are,” says Gilly, paraphrasing one of America’s greatest photographers, Minor White.

“I like the dreamy, the ambiguous, the moody, the spontaneous, the colourful and the symbolic, and I like to find these in very ordinary places where they often go unnoticed. I don’t own much gear and I’m not very interested in the equipment – the technology is a means to an end and while I do think that much is gained from knowing how to use it, ultimately the power of an image comes from the photographer’s ability to see freshly and clearly.”

Tune in or listen online between 10am and 12 noon on Sunday to find out more about mindfulness in photography, how Gilly discovered her photographic voice and how she helps others to do so too in her workshops, creative photo walks and personal tuition.

There might even be time to ask her to share her sonnet on the theme of chocolate, a love story that’s pretty universal too!

A crafty collab

It’s all about collabs these days, especially in the fashion world – everywhere you look, someone’s collaborating with someone else to bring out a new collection or launch a new range.

Think H&M x Kenzo, Moschino x Barbie, Adidas x Kanye West or Puma x Gosha Rubchinskiy (he’s the Russian designer of the moment if you were wondering!) to name just a few…

And now, there’s a new collab in town!

Michelle Baker has teamed up with a group of like-minded ladies to turn the top floor of Newark’s  Crafty Betty into a space that’s bursting at the seams with goodies.

Whether you’re looking for supplies for your own projects or searching for a gift with a difference, it’s a veritable treasure trove offering everything from fabrics, patterns and paints to cushions, brooches, sock monkeys and more.

Michelle and fellow busy bees Amanda Thompson, Julie Webster, Sally Harrison and Rachael Cumberland didn’t take much persuading to switch off their sewing machines next Sunday morning to join June and Tina in the studio.

Let’s face it, who wouldn’t jump at the chance to combine chatting to the Girls Around Town with the opportunity to try out a rather special cake in the latest Chocolate Moment?!

Tune in or listen online between 10am and 12 noon to hear all about their new venture, some of the events and workshops in the pipeline and of course the crafty collab’s verdict on that chocolate cake…

Everyone Can-Do!

can doIf you’ve ever fancied having a go at making your own films, this week’s guest is here to tell you how you can – with just a smart phone or an iPad!

Gillian Bates will be in the studio with the Girls Around Town to talk about how she and George Bassett set up Can-Do Film back in 2014 to encourage the development and creation of great low and no budget film on both a regional and national scale.

can do 2She’ll have news of upcoming workshops in and around Nottinghamshire. Whether you want to start with just the basics and Make A Movie In A Day or delve a little deeper over two days, you’ll have the opportunity to shoot and edit your own short film. No iPad? No worries – you can even borrow one for the course!

Gillian will also be talking about the first Can-Do Film Festival in 2015, plans for the next one in 2017 and their two pop-up cinemas – one in a converted VW camper and the other in a velvet-walled marquee with vintage cinema seats – which are available to hire for screenings at events.

Join Gillian, June and Tina on air or listen online from 10am to 12 noon on Sunday. In the meantime, if you want to see the sort of thing you could achieve with Can-Do, why not take a look here at some of the films made by participants on previous courses?
