Written in the stars

solarsystemTina’s always had a fascination for astrology and on this week’s show, she’ll be delving a little deeper into the subject with the help of guest Mary Clarke.

A practising astrologer for over 30 years, Mary will be explaining where it came from, how birth charts are created and how they differ from the horoscopes we see in newspapers and magazines.

Tina and Mary will also be discussing what astrology can reveal about family traits and relationships. They’ll even touch on what it can tell us about The Beatles and which planets you might want to be well-aspected when setting your wedding date!

Check out Mary’s blog for more on this fascinating subject – and don’t forget to tune in or listen online from 10am to 1pm on Saturday, when the Girls Around Town take a look at just what is written in the stars…

A feast of local flavours

food festThe Girls Around Town will be casting the culinary net even wider on Saturday, taking a look at a fabulous festival coming up next month.

Celebrating local food from artisan producers based in and around Nottinghamshire, the Winter FoodFest returns to Thoresby Courtyard near Ollerton on Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 November.

And who better to give June, Tina and Sue the inside scoop on what to expect than the festival’s organiser?

Alison Lowe will be taking a break from pulling it all together to talk about some of the terrific stalls lined up for this annual event, now in its seventh year.

With cookery demonstrations by local chefs in the Kitchen Theatre, a themed Treasure Hunt for children and plenty of tasty treats to try and buy in the Riding Hall and the Courtyard, it’s a must for foodies. And the ideal opportunity to start preparing for the festive season by stocking up on Christmas fare and gifts…

The Winter FoodFest is open from 10am to 4pm both days, admission is free and there’s plenty of free parking on site too.

For the very latest on all the goodies in offer, don’t forget to tune in or listen online from 10am to 1pm on Saturday…

A batch made in heaven

breadNo cake on the show on Saturday – it’s all about bread this week!

After 30 years in finance and the motor industry, in 2008 Gail Hooley escaped to Southern Ireland to explore a firm belief that good, clean food and health are inextricably linked.

Working on a 100 acre organic farm in County Cork, where fresh bread was made every day, she began to question how such a simple and organic process has become so adulterated by industrial bread makers, who now take so many shortcuts to produce a more complex, less digestible, less nutritious loaf.

A course with Andrew Whitley, a professional organic baker, founder of Bread Matters and co-founder of the Real Bread Campaign, provided some of the answers. But it also generated a desire to get the message across to the local community so in February 2014 she returned to Bread Matters to learn how to run a community bread making initiative.

Gail will be joining the Girls Around Town after 11am to talk about how she’s now using her skills at the Ecocentre in Screveton, teaching people to make their own clean bread in a convivial and social environment, in the hope that they in turn will take those skills out into the community and encourage friends and family to eat good bread.

Tune in or listen online from 10am to 1pm to find out more – June, Tina and Sue are crossing their fingers in the hope that Gail may even be bringing samples of the staff of life for them to try!
