Season’s greetings from the Girls Around Town

Wow, what a year this has been! The Girls Around Town have been busier than ever throughout 2019 and by Sunday 29 December will have

  • Presented 51 shows (just one weekend off for the coverage of the Newark Half Marathon in August)
  • Welcomed 59 different guests to the studio
  • Brought you 60 interviews

From books and bras to death cafés and dance, fashion shows and flowers to loos and laughter yoga, pop up shops and pants to wills and wellbeing…

June, Rachel, Rosalyn and Claire have covered them all – and a lot more besides!

They couldn’t let the year end without saying a huge thank you to all the lovely ladies (and a few brave blokes as well) who gave up their own Sunday mornings over the past 12 months to make the shows so entertaining, informative and such great fun.

And thanks too to those of you follow us on FacebookTwitter or Instagram and especially to everyone tuning in to 107.8FM each week to listen to the stories all those guests had to tell…

If there’s one New Year resolution your four favourite Radio Newark presenters will be making, it’s to keep up the good work – welcoming guests new and old to the studio and bringing you lots more news, views and laughter throughout the months ahead.

Be sure to keep your eyes peeled for something brand new coming your way from the Girls Around Town next year. They’re keeping it under wraps for now but all will be revealed soon – in the meantime, from Newark’s Fab Four

Thank you one and all – have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year – here’s to a great 2020 together!!

Can you believe more than a year has passed since Sarah Cobb joined the Girls Around Town to talk about the first ever Santa Run in aid of local charity Reach?

The good news is the event was so successful it’s back again soon – and Sarah’s back too, in the studio next weekend with all the details you need to know about this very festive fundraiser!

But before she turns your attention to the second Santa Run that’s coming up on Sunday 1 Decembershe’ll be casting her mind back to 2018, updating June and Rachel on how things went when runners of all ages and abilities joined in the fun at Newark‘s Sconce & Devon Park

Hopefully what she has to say will fire you with enthusiasm to get involved in this year’s event and run, jog or walk round the two mile course to help raise much-needed funds for Reach.

The run starts at 11am and there’s a mince pie, a medal and a free Santa suit or hat for all the participants. And if you accessorise your outfit, you could be in with a chance to win a prize in one of three categories, for the best adult’s fancy dress, best child’s fancy dress and best dog’s fancy dress!

Places are limited so you need to register soon – check out all the details of this family-friendly event online here and make sure you act fast to take advantage of the Early Bird prices which are available until 11pm on Thursday 31 October.

And don’t forget to tune in to 107.8FM or listen online between 10am and 12 noon next Sunday for more information about the event and about the work Reach does to support over 200 adults with learning disabilities in Nottinghamshire.

Win a free wedding reception at Carriages Café

If you’re planning to tie the knot next year but, for financial or other reasons, are unable to hold a reception after the wedding ceremony, Carriages Café  in Newark wants to hear from you.

The team at Carriages is offering one local couple the opportunity to celebrate with a free reception in its Pullman Suite, part of the newly renovated Victorian building alongside Platform 1 of Newark Castle Station.

The wedding party will have exclusive use of the Pullman Suite between 11am and 4.30pm on the date of the marriage, with Buck’s Fizz on arrival, a buffet for up to 30 guests, a Prosecco toast and a traditional single-tiered wedding cake. In addition, flowers for the top table, unlimited tea and coffee, background music and the services of a toastmaster will all be included in this incredible offer.

“We’re looking for a couple getting married in 2019 who deserve to share their special day with family and friends but whose personal circumstances mean this is something they would otherwise have to forego,” said Wendy Baird. “So we’re inviting people to get in touch and let us know just why a reception at Carriages would  be the icing on the cake for them.

“We’d also like to hear from people wanting to nominate someone who deserves a chance to win. If you know a local couple like this, who serve the community, volunteer for a charity or are carers perhaps, please get in touch and tell us about them.

“Being involved with and giving back to the community is something very close to our hearts at Carriages and we  hope this is another small way in which we can continue to do this. We know this is something we have in common with many other local businesses too so if any of them would like to support us by offering to donate the flowers, cake or other wedding favours we’d love to hear from them.”

Nominations for the free wedding reception can be made by sending an email to abigail@carriagesnewark.co.uk or via  the Carriages Facebook page. The closing date for nominations is Friday 30 November; an independent panel of judges will meet in the first week of December to draw up a shortlist and a public vote for the three finalists will be open on Facebook from Monday 10 December.

“We will be announcing the result of the public vote on Monday 24 December,” added Wendy. “What better Christmas present could there be for one lucky couple than to find out they will be able to celebrate their wedding with us next year?”
