Getting started is everything

How often do you find yourself putting off a job you really need to do?

A task that might be making you feel bad – perhaps it’s boring, too difficult or you’re just worried about failing?

It’s called procrastination of course and it’s going to be the main focus of wellbeing guru Rosalyn Palmer‘s chat when she joins June in the studio for this weekend’s Girls Around Town.

Research shows that once the first step is made towards a task, following through becomes easier – that once you get started, you’re typically able to keep going and in fact getting started is everything.

Ros will be live on air in the second hour of the show, explaining why it’s so tempting to put off what you should be doing and instead spend your time lounging on the sofa, browsing around on social media feeds or YouTube…

Where apparently the current fad for watching online cat videos is currently attracting billions of views!

She’ll be describing some of the effects of procrastination on both physical and mental health and how not putting off till tomorrow the things you should be doing today can help avoid those problems before she turns her attention to something coming back to Lincolnshire next month.

The second Boston Book Festival takes place on Friday 16, Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 September in various venues across the town and Ros, a successful author herself, will be back to take part in some of the many events.

You’ll find full details of the festival programme here, together with information on how to book tickets for the events you want to enjoy.

But in the meantime, make sure you Put On Your Sunday Best this weekend, on 107.8FM, on the apps, on Alexa or online from just after 11am to hear what Ros has to say about her own involvement in the event…

And of course to get that all-important information on how overcoming procrastination could have a major positive impact on your life!

From crafts to curling – and even a little bit of karaoke!

What’s the connection between regular craft classes held at a church here in Newark, a recent fundraising event opened by the Town Mayor and a letter from Buckingham Palace no less?

At least two people know the answer – June herself of course and Carolyn Brocklebank, her next guest on Girls Around Town

And they’ll be live on air in the second hour of this Sunday‘s show to fill you all in!

A former teacher, Carolyn is a Trustee for Newark MENCAP who volunteers at the meetings of a group of special needs adults called The Avenue, based at the Congregational Church on Hatton Gardens.

On the programme every week, members take part in a whole range of activities including dancing, singing, karaoke, health, well being and curling, along with the different crafts they get to try with Carolyn herself.

Late last month, the group hosted an event featuring tea, coffee and cakes, games and tombola which aimed at raising funds to take its clients out to TWINLAKES Theme Park for the day.

Carolyn will have an update on the event itself, along with details of how the fundraising went and why this planned outing – the first the group’s members will be able to enjoy since before the start of Covid restrictions – is so important to everyone involved.

Last but by no means least, she’ll be answering the final bit of that question above – just where does a letter from Buckingham Palace come in?

It was received in response to a special project they did to celebrate the recent Platinum Jubilee but if you want to know more, you’ll need to Put On Your Sunday Best on 107.8FM, on the free apps, on Alexa or online between 10am and 12 noon to find out all about it from Carolyn…

Suffice to say, it’s already been framed and not surprisingly now has pride of place in their meeting room!

Five Fs for joy

There was no Girls Around Town last Sunday morning of course but don’t worry – June‘s back behind the mic from 10am till 12 noon this weekend…

And on the other side of the desk in the second hour of the show, wellbeing guru Rosalyn Palmer will be back too, with her top tips on how to check whether you’re living a whole and balanced life.

Her advice on how to do just that, shared in a recent article online, is to think about the fingers of one hand. Five fingers of course, so you always need 5Fs for joy – although, as you’ll discover when you’re listening in, there’s a sixth one added to the list as well!

Take a little time every day to tick the foundational five categories off easily with each finger, asking yourself as you do

  • What will I do today to build my FAITH in myself or something beyond me?
  • What actions will I take to be FIT in body and mind, even for 10 minutes?
  • How can I connect with my FAMILY OR FRIENDS today?
  • How can I allow the FLOW of energy that is money and reward to flow to me?
  • How can I have FUN today?

If you’re too busy to Put On Your Sunday Best this week, you’ll find Ros’s full article at Brainz Magazine here.

But better yet, make sure you’re tuned to 107.8FM or listening on the apps, on Alexa or online from just after 11am

When she’ll be sharing not only those five top tips but that sixth one too!
