Putting wellness at the top of the list this weekend

Looking for a few new ways to boost your physical or mental wellbeing?

Then you need to Put On Your Sunday Best as usual to hear what guest Johanna Thompson has to say when she joins June in the first hour of this week’s Girls Around Town.

Another familiar voice on the show, Johanna will be back from just after 10.20am with details of the Wellness Network‘s latest event taking place over in Lincoln on Sunday 26 September

On the phone this time though, as she has a pressing engagement at 11am running one of the group’s regular online meetings!

Featuring hand-picked speakers, experts in exercise and nutrition, taster treatments, some of the latest vegan products for inside and out and ways to help and enhance your mind, the Lincoln Health & Wellness Show is being held at The Bentley Hotel & Spa in South Hykeham, which local listeners will know is just a quick drive up the A46 from Newark.

Take that trip towards the end of the month and, among the presentations on the programme, you’ll finds topics as diverse as where to start with a plant-based diet, how being selfish is the most selfless thing you can do, using reflexology to support menstrual and reproductive health…

And even one intriguingly titled A slouchy sweater and a little bit of pixie dust!!

Tickets are on sale now via the Wellness Network’s website, priced just £3.50 each if you book online by 4pm on Saturday 25 September or £5 if you’re paying cash on the day.

What’s more, the event will be supporting The Lincoln Foodbank, with 50p from each ticket sold, together with all the proceeds from a raffle on the day which Johanna says will be featuring some amazing prizes, going to this invaluable local charity.

If this sounds like something you and your friends would benefit from and enjoy, make sure you’re listening on 107.8FM, on the apps, on Alexa or online from 10am this weekend to find out more…

And stay tuned right through to 12 noon for plenty of other local news and great music with June throughout the rest of the show!

Return of the dragons!

All kinds of exciting – and unusual! – events in and around Newark recently…

And on Girls Around Town this week, there’ll be news of yet another one set to make its return on Sunday 19 September!

Joining June in the studio in the second hour of the show, Beaumond House Hospice head of fundraising Cathy Lowe will have all the latest information about the Dragon Boat Festival coming to the River Trent alongside Riverside Park.

Originally scheduled to take place in the summer of 2020, the event was of course postponed due to Covid-19 but Cathy and Rachel Wilson of the Children’s Bereavement Centre have been busy since early spring making sure it will be back bigger and better than ever this autumn.

“We’re determined to build on the success of the Dragon Boat Festival held here in 2019,” says Cathy. “That one raised vital funds for both charities and brought together people from our communities in a fantastic fun-filled day – we can’t wait to do it all again!”

Cathy will be live on air from just after 11.10am on Sunday to talk about some of the teams taking to the water in their dragon boats and the different prizes on offer, not just for the finalists but for the best-dressed team and the one raising the most money for the two charities.

She’ll have details too of what’s in store for visitors making their way down to Riverside Park on the day, when some of the Radio Newark team will be taking to the stage – although not to the water! – to entertain one and all between 10am and 5.30pm.

So a couple of important dates to remember…

Make sure you tune in to 107.8FM or listen online this weekend to hear what Cathy has to stay – and don’t forget to put Sunday 19 September in your diary to enjoy an action-packed day in support of two of Newark’s best-loved charities!

Celebrating books, arts, crafts and a whole lot more this autumn!

It’s time for a look ahead to a couple of major events coming to two local towns with the help of this week’s guests on Girls Around Town.

Getting it all started, Jane Keightley will be on the phone to the studio from just after 10.20am with the latest news about the first ever Boston Book Festival taking place next month…

Then the focus is on Newark itself when Donna Hall joins June in the studio at 11.10am with details of another brand new event the Palace Theatre will be hosting at the beginning of October.

A regular guest on the show, Jane will have the latest details of what’s in store for book lovers over the weekend of Friday 17 to Sunday 19 September.

From poetry to chicklit, children’s books to historical fiction – and everything in between – there’s bound to be something to suit you, whether you’re an avid reader or just looking for something to pass the time while you’re sitting on a plane heading to the sun!

With all the events taking place at venues in and around Boston’s historic Market Place, there’ll be plenty of opportunities to meet some of the authors and talk about their work…

Who knows, you may even be inspired to write your very own best-seller!

Then, with a little help from Donna, it’s time to look ahead to the beginning of October and an event which, among other venues, features another equally historic Market Place just a short distance from the Radio Newark studio.

Part of a nationwide initiative which encourages communities to come together and create their own events, sharing and celebrating the genius in everyone, Newark’s Fun Palace will be showcasing all that the area has to offer.

From crafts to cooking, dance to self-defence classes and much more, the sky really is the limit in what’s being described as ‘a jumble sale of skills’ on offer between Friday 1 and Sunday 3 October.

Donna will have all the information you need, whether you’re a local crafter, maker or business owner looking to show off your own skills or you want to bring the family along to some of the activities and join in the fun.

Don’t forget to your Put On Your Sunday Best this weekend to join June, Jane and Donna listen online, on the apps or on 107.8FM from 10am to 12 noon….

And in the meantime, put those September and October dates in your diaries to make sure you don’t miss these two exciting new events coming to Boston and Newark this autumn!
