Win a free wedding reception at Carriages Café

If you’re planning to tie the knot next year but, for financial or other reasons, are unable to hold a reception after the wedding ceremony, Carriages Café  in Newark wants to hear from you.

The team at Carriages is offering one local couple the opportunity to celebrate with a free reception in its Pullman Suite, part of the newly renovated Victorian building alongside Platform 1 of Newark Castle Station.

The wedding party will have exclusive use of the Pullman Suite between 11am and 4.30pm on the date of the marriage, with Buck’s Fizz on arrival, a buffet for up to 30 guests, a Prosecco toast and a traditional single-tiered wedding cake. In addition, flowers for the top table, unlimited tea and coffee, background music and the services of a toastmaster will all be included in this incredible offer.

“We’re looking for a couple getting married in 2019 who deserve to share their special day with family and friends but whose personal circumstances mean this is something they would otherwise have to forego,” said Wendy Baird. “So we’re inviting people to get in touch and let us know just why a reception at Carriages would  be the icing on the cake for them.

“We’d also like to hear from people wanting to nominate someone who deserves a chance to win. If you know a local couple like this, who serve the community, volunteer for a charity or are carers perhaps, please get in touch and tell us about them.

“Being involved with and giving back to the community is something very close to our hearts at Carriages and we  hope this is another small way in which we can continue to do this. We know this is something we have in common with many other local businesses too so if any of them would like to support us by offering to donate the flowers, cake or other wedding favours we’d love to hear from them.”

Nominations for the free wedding reception can be made by sending an email to abigail@carriagesnewark.co.uk or via  the Carriages Facebook page. The closing date for nominations is Friday 30 November; an independent panel of judges will meet in the first week of December to draw up a shortlist and a public vote for the three finalists will be open on Facebook from Monday 10 December.

“We will be announcing the result of the public vote on Monday 24 December,” added Wendy. “What better Christmas present could there be for one lucky couple than to find out they will be able to celebrate their wedding with us next year?”

In bloom at Beloved

It’s the Newark Half Marathon on Sunday 12 August so there’ll be no Girls Around Town  this week…

The girls aren’t taking part (why are you not surprised?!) but they’ll be having a bit of a break while Radio Newark broadcasts live from the race throughout the morning.

Fear not though, June and Rachel will be back the following weekend when they’ll be joined by old friend and former co-presenter of the show, Tina Bettison

Tina will be in the studio on Sunday 19 August to talk about all things arty, both in her own studio and gallery BELOVED@THEBARN and further afield in and around Southwell.

She’ll be looking back at some of the events of the last few weeks and there’ll be news too of what’s happening now and what’s to come – including the Southwell Music FestivalCeramics in Southwell and, last but by no means least, The Barn’s very own Summer Party!

To find out more, tune in or listen online between 10am and 12 noon – in the meantime, if you’re reading this well before Sunday 19 August, there could still be time for you catch a couple of those upcoming events.

Local artist Jo Munks, whose exhibition Women InBloom runs throughout the month, will be giving an evening talk about her work on Thursday 16 August. The talk begins at 7pm and refreshments are included in the ticket price of £5 in advance or £8 on the door but places are limited – call Tina on 07519 826819 or visit The Barn at 79 King Street in Southwell to check availability…

On Saturday 18 August, there’s a opportunity for children over 8-years old (and their well-behaved parents!) to create their own collage masterpieces to take away. Tickets are £10 for adults, kids go free, all materials are included and there’s no need to book – just drop in any time between 1pm and 4pm.

And if you haven’t visited The Barn yet, how about a little virtual tour?

Catching up with Carriages

Time for another catch up on Girls Around Town next weekend, when Wendy Baird and Suzie Jones join June and Rachel to share some of the highlights of the nine months that have flown by since Carriages Café first opened its doors in Newark last August…

Nominated in the Best New Venue category of the prestigious Nottinghamshire Food & Drinks Awards for 2018 (watch this space for details of when and how to vote later in the year!), Carriages has quickly become a popular spot for meetings, leisurely lunches and afternoon teas, as well as the perfect place to grab a takeaway coffee and snack while waiting for a train.

It’s also been home to wide range of events, with cupcakes on Valentine’s Day, a Christmas Fair and a Syrian-themed evening just a small sample of what’s been on the menu recently. And its Community Café is now a firm favourite with customers who want to meet old friends and make new ones while enjoying a three-course meal for just £3 every Wednesday evening and – if they wish – give others the chance to eat or drink free at Carriages by taking part in the Pay It Forward scheme.

Tune in or listen online between 10am and 12 noon on Sunday for news too of  what’s in store for the months to come – including Carriages‘ involvement in the Newark Book Festival and in the Newark line-up of this year’s Open Studios Notts, when visitors will be able to see Suzie working in situ on one of her whimsical pieces of artwork…
