Are you a mother in business? Then you’re in good company – these days, more and more mums run their own businesses…

In fact, the Collins English Dictionary even has a word for mums like you!

Mumpreneur (noun) : A woman who combines running a business enterprise with raising her children

One such woman is this week’s Girls Around Town guest Laura Young, who’ll be talking to June about her own life as a mumpreneur.

She’ll be describing why, how and when she set up Lexico, handmaking jewellery and hair accessories. And how she’s helping to support other mumpreneurs too, through her involvement in the Mums in Business Association.

Originally an online community designed to be a place where MIBs could gather to support each other, MIBA was launched in June 2017 by sisters Estelle Keeber and Leona Burton. Over the past 18 months, the MIBA tribe has grown to almost 32,000 and members now regularly meet in person too, at networking events in over 50 locations worldwide – from England and Spain to Australia and Barbados to name just a few!

Tune in or listen online between 10am and 12 noon on Sunday to hear Laura’s story and find out about the Mumpreneur on Fire series of books, each one featuring the stories of inspirational, empowered mothers in business just like her.

Behind the scenes of a busy life

From strutting her stuff on stage to chairing one of Newark‘s leading networking groups, this week’s guest on Girls Around Town is no stranger to the limelight – meet PR account manager Kerri Saxby, who joins June and Rachel in the studio to talk about her various roles past, present and future…

A member of Newark Business Club since August 2015, she was elected chairman earlier this year and is looking forward to working alongside its committee and members to raise the town’s profile.

Keen to extend NBC‘s links with local businesses and to support new companies coming into the area, she’ll be explaining how she’s making it her mission to encourage new members from different sectors to join the club.

She’ll be looking back too at the time she spent helping to build a school in Zambia last year, as well looking ahead to her part in Stroke of Genius Community Theatre Company‘s upcoming production of Giving Up Guilt.

Written by Caroline Drury and Cliff McArdle, this new musical comedy tells the story of modern living when it seems that everything except being thin, keeping fit and being successful leaves most of us with a guilty conscience about something or other.

The show goes on tour later this month, with its first stop at the Magnus Academy in Newark on Friday 22 and Saturday 23 June. Then it’s on to Muskham Community Centre on Tuesday 26 June before ending its run on Friday 29 and Saturday 30 June at Claypole Village Hall.

Tune in or listen online between 10am and 12 noon on Sunday for a look behind the scenes of Kerri’s busy life…

Spreading the net

networkingIt’s often said that it’s not what you know, but who you know… And sometimes more to the point, especially in business, who knows you!

Let’s face it, where would we be without our different networks? Formal or informal, physical or virtual, professional or personal – we rely on them all in one way or another…

On this week’s show, the Girls Around Town take a look at networking in Newark, with guest Portia Green joining June and Sue to explore some of the options available in and around the town.

As marketing co-ordinator for 4Networking Newark, Portia will also be talking about how its fortnightly meetings support and motivate local businessmen and women and the organisation’s national celebration of its 10th birthday this month.

Tune in or listen online from 10am to 12 noon for the discussion, as well as all the usual GAT gossip, news and music to ease you through another Sunday morning…
