From fashion to funerals

It’s not unusual for guests on Girls Around Town to be talking about why and how they made the decision to change their careers.

But switching from fashion consultant to civil celebrant? That surely has to be a first and definitely one worth hearing more about…

Which is exactly what you’ll be doing when you tune in to this weekend’s show!

Based in Newark, just a stone’s throw away from the Radio Newark studios in fact, Mandy Moran will be on the phone to tell June – and you – what prompted her to take on such a role after many years working for two well-known clothing shops in town.

The new job’s not just about funerals though – as a celebrant, Mandy will be helping people to organise weddings and christenings too…

Tune in to 107.8FM or listen online from 11.20am on Sunday for her story – she’s an artist as well, so no doubt she’ll be talking about her passion for pencil and ink drawings during their chat.

And don’t miss the rest of your favourite weekend show – as usual, there’ll be plenty of gossip and good music to enjoy between 10am and 12 noon!

A super simple style idea

Thinking about fashion in these troublesome times may seem rather frivolous but what do you think are the chances of June changing the habits of a lifetime?

You’re right – somewhere pretty close to impossible!

And let’s face it, we all need something to take our minds off what’s happening in the world right now, not to mention something to look forward to when our lives finally get back to normal.

Which is why, while the show is sadly off air, the Girls Around Town will be doing their best to look on the bright side of life by sharing stories, ideas, hints and tips they’ve come across recently.

First up it’s a little fashion tip that popped up on the Facebook page of American stylist  Brenda Kinsel recently. It’s super simple but works a treat with t-shirts and tops – June’s totally sold on it so why not take a look and see what you think?

Then watch this space for a few more ideas that June, RosalynRachel and Claire hope might put a smile on your face and a spring in your step…

Something old, somewhere new

It’s all about vintage on the show this weekend!

Flashing back to the 40s and 50s, in the first hour Harriet Lawton from Visit Lincs Coast will be talking about an upcoming event which mixes the old and the new.

The ‘old’ is the theme of the event, the ‘new’ the fact that the little Lincolnshire town of Sutton-on-Sea is hosting the event for the very first time…

Vintage on Sea comes to Sutton on Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 May, bringing a vintage market, Punch and Judy, classic cars and entertainment for all the family to the High Street between 11am and 5pm both days.

There’ll be plenty of live music throughout the weekend too. Jive to the sounds of Glen Miller and sing along to some of those silly wartime songs with Johnny Victory – and you’ll need your dancing shoes again to join in the fun as members of the Lincolnshire Lindy Hop Clubs and DJ Dr Swing take centre stage to teach you a few steps!

Hot on Harriet’s heels, Maxine Hoole-Jackson will be continuing the ‘something old, somewhere new’ theme in the second hour of the show.

She’ll be chatting to June and Rosalyn about her passion for vintage fashion and accessories, a passion that’s obvious to customers lining up to browse and shop at Rocket Retro.

Recently re-located to The Arcade in Newark, it’s a tiny treasure trove that reflects Maxine’s own colourful, quirky style. Find out where and how she sources the pre-loved items on sale and why giving a new lease of life to everything from t-shirts to tea dresses, boots to bags – and more –  is so important to her.

Tune in or listen online between 10am and 12 noon on Sunday for a touch of nostalgia with Harriet, Maxine and the Girls Around Town
