In the spirit of things

mind body spirit posterLooking for something a little different to do this weekend? Try this for size: the Mind, Body and Spirit Show at Fernwood Village Hall on Sunday 25 January…

Browse among stalls offering everything from candles to coffee bean readers, reiki to runes and much, much more. And while you do it, you’ll be contributing to a fund-raising effort to help 14 year-old Mia Jarvis take part in her World Challenge in Africa next year.

Sunday’s show is the first in a series of events planned for 2015, aimed at helping to raise the £4,000 Mia needs in order to spend a month in Zambia and Botswana working on long-term projects for communities there.

You can follow Mia’s progress towards the challenge on her Facebook page and meet her in person on Sunday – rumour has it she’ll be lending a hand behind the tea bar!

The Mind, Body and Spirit Show is open from 10am to 4pm, you’ll find the village hall on Ruby’s Way in Fernwood and admission is just £4 with all proceeds going to help fund Mia’s challenge.

These girls can – can you?

This_Girl_Can_Logo_PMS_248We’re loving the ad promoting This Girl Can, the national Sport England campaign celebrating active women who are doing their thing no matter how well they do it – and letting nothing (not even sweat!) stand in their way.

Designed to inspire women to wiggle, jiggle, move and prove that judgement is a barrier that can be overcome, the initiative has been gathering support from individuals and clubs across the country and beyond since the ad first appeared on TV a few days ago.

good things come 2It’s aimed at encouraging women of all ages and abilities, shapes and sizes into sport or exercise, showcasing ‘real’ women to demonstrate that, although fear of judgement is stopping many of us from taking part in exercise, it really doesn’t have to.

And with “Sweating like a pig, feeling like a fox” and “I kick balls, deal with it” among the hard-hitting lines used, the campaign certainly doesn’t pull any punches(!) in its approach…

you don't have to go fastDefinitely an initiative and a topic the Girls Around Town will be exploring on the show when we’re back on air – well, what else would you expect when one of us is the updisputed Deadlift Queen of a leading Newark gym?!

And we’ll be inviting you to contribute to the discussion by sharing your own stories on air and on our Facebook page, so watch this space.

In the meantime, you can find out more about This Girl Can and how to get involved here.

If you haven’t already seen the ad, take a look now – it’s guaranteed to make you giggle. And if it doesn’t inspire you to wiggle, jiggle and ‘get your freak on’, then nothing will!

Simply scent-sational!

candela shopWho doesn’t love a pretty perfumed candle?

There’s nothing quite like the combination of softly flickering light and a heavenly scent to help you unwind after a stressful day or set the scene for romantic meal – after all, Valentine’s Day is just around the corner!

With its range of hand-poured soy wax candles and melts, complemented by diffusers and room sprays, The Candela Shop in Beeston opened for business in the middle of December, just in time to take advantage of the last-minute rush for Christmas gifts.

cognac and orange candleOwner Saffron Bradshaw sources her stock from small artisan producers across the UK. Toxin-free and totally natural, the candles come in a wide choice of fragrances – how about Cognac and Orange from Cambridge, Sparkling Mint Massage or Irish Winter (both from Belfast) or Saffron’s own current favourite Strudel, from Smouldering Wicks in nearby Nottingham?

After a busy first few weeks in the run-up to Christmas, Saffron is now getting ready for the shop’s official launch on Saturday 31 January.

Details are still being finalised but expect goody bags packed with luscious treats and offers, a ribbon-cutting ceremony by the Mayor and celebratory fizz of course! Put the date in your diaries and watch this space for updates…

You’ll find The Candela Shop at 1 Stoney Street in Beeston. Opening hours are 10am to 5.30pm on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday; 10am to 5pm on Wednesday; 9.30am to 5pm on Saturday; and 10am to 4pm on Sunday.
