A new chapter begins…

She’s no stranger to interviews but the boot will be firmly on the other foot for next weekend’s guest when she’ll be the one answering questions instead of asking them.

A journalist with 40 years’ experience, Lucy Millard will be joining the Girls Around Town to talk about some of the highlights of her time spent working for the Newark Advertiser.

And about how she’s now put her notebook and pen to one side to take up a new role with what is probably one of the town’s best known and best loved charities, Beaumond House Community Hospice

One of the memories Lucy will be re-living goes right back to her first assignment as a young reporter, when she interviewed the legendary Ken Dodd after one of his equally legendary appearances at the Palace Theatre. As usual, his performance ran over until well past midnight but, ever the gentleman, he was happy to give her all the time she needed to capture her story.

From court cases to council meetings, wedding anniversary celebrations to Royal visits, she’s lost count of the number of events she’s attended and the interviews they’ve involved and has always had a keen interest in helping to promote the work of local charities and volunteers.

So it’s perhaps not surprising that the new job she chose earlier this year gives her the chance to combine the two. She’ll be describing her own role as volunteer co-ordinator for Beaumond House and, with help from Maria Hewitt, the role of its volunteers as well.

Who knows, at this point June may well pass the baton back to Lucy and let her be the one to interview Maria about the 15 years she’s been a volunteer and a member of the hospice fundraising team!

Tune in or listen online between 10am and 12 noon on Sunday to hear Lucy’s stories of days gone by and find out what’s in store for her and her team in the months to come…

Something old, somewhere new

It’s all about vintage on the show this weekend!

Flashing back to the 40s and 50s, in the first hour Harriet Lawton from Visit Lincs Coast will be talking about an upcoming event which mixes the old and the new.

The ‘old’ is the theme of the event, the ‘new’ the fact that the little Lincolnshire town of Sutton-on-Sea is hosting the event for the very first time…

Vintage on Sea comes to Sutton on Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 May, bringing a vintage market, Punch and Judy, classic cars and entertainment for all the family to the High Street between 11am and 5pm both days.

There’ll be plenty of live music throughout the weekend too. Jive to the sounds of Glen Miller and sing along to some of those silly wartime songs with Johnny Victory – and you’ll need your dancing shoes again to join in the fun as members of the Lincolnshire Lindy Hop Clubs and DJ Dr Swing take centre stage to teach you a few steps!

Hot on Harriet’s heels, Maxine Hoole-Jackson will be continuing the ‘something old, somewhere new’ theme in the second hour of the show.

She’ll be chatting to June and Rosalyn about her passion for vintage fashion and accessories, a passion that’s obvious to customers lining up to browse and shop at Rocket Retro.

Recently re-located to The Arcade in Newark, it’s a tiny treasure trove that reflects Maxine’s own colourful, quirky style. Find out where and how she sources the pre-loved items on sale and why giving a new lease of life to everything from t-shirts to tea dresses, boots to bags – and more –  is so important to her.

Tune in or listen online between 10am and 12 noon on Sunday for a touch of nostalgia with Harriet, Maxine and the Girls Around Town

From bakes to makes

Two for the price of one again this weekend – as the first guest leaves the studio, another arrives for the second hour of the show…

Ever wondered who’s behind those bold and beautiful menu blackboards in your favourite coffee shop or restaurant? Or tried to find someone to custom-make a sign for a special occasion of your own?

Well, chances are at least some of those blackboards were Made By Mee – aka Marie Elizabeth Edwards, who’ll be talking to June and Rachel about her passion for creating freehand works of art that help make businesses stand out from the crowd.

And describing how her flair for design can add a personal touch to everything from the countdown to holidays and Christmas to weddings, christenings and home decor.

Given that Marie will be chatting to the Girls Around Town on Mothering Sunday, the other news she has to share is particularly appropriate.

As coordinator for the Newark branch of the Mums In Business Association, she’ll be hosting the group’s first event on Thursday 11 April, from 10am to 12 noon at the Roman Way on Lincoln Road.

Tune in or listen online from11am on Sunday to find out more about MIBA, an international community with almost 32,000 members worldwide, and what’s in store for Marie’s fellow MIBs at next month’s launch.

Tickets for the first meeting are already available online – if you’re a busy working mum, this child-friendly networking group could be just what you’ve been looking for!
