Pampered to perfection

We all deserve a little bit of ‘me’ time occasionally, don’t we?

And if it comes with shopping and a glass of Pimms too – well, what’s not to love?

When Emma Mayle mentioned an evening with all this and more coming up in Balderton during her interview on the show a couple of weeks ago, June and Rachel immediately spotted a chance for a fun night out.

Not surprisingly, Rosalyn was quick to agree – so it’s Girls Around Town On Tour on Friday 29 March…

The Pimms, Shopping and Pamper Evening takes place from 7pm to 9.30pm in St Giles Church Hall (opposite Chesters pub for those of you not too familiar with Balderton) and tickets are just £5 each, with a glass of Pimms included in the price.

But you’ll have to get your skates on if you haven’t got yours yet – advance booking is essential and the deadline is Wednesday 27 March.

With Mothering Sunday and Easter just around the corner, you’ll find plenty of ideas for gifts and treats among the stands with fresh flowers, dream catchers, jewellery and paintings just a few of the goodies on offer.

Add bouquets of sweets from Simply Sweet, garden ornaments, children’s books, music from Adele Woodsford Priestley, a fashion show courtesy of Rocket Retro and a raffle to the mix and it’s safe to say there’ll be something for everyone…

From a pampering perspective, how about a mini manicure, a mini head massage or a chance to check you’re wearing the right size bra and browse through the lovely lingerie sold by Janice Holmes, another recent GAT guest?

All proceeds from the evening will be divided equally between Newark‘s Beaumond House Hospice, St Alice Hospice in Esher and Cancer Research UK. So call or text Lorraine West on 07707 524998 by next Wednesday to get your tickets and support these good causes while having an equally good time.

Oh and there’ll be cake too – in fact, rumour has it there might even be Pimms cupcakes! Need we say more?

Captain Krankypants comes to Carriages

On Tuesday 18 December Australian returning veteran and successful businessman Trace Dann, known to audiences worldwide as the legendary Captain Krankypants, will be entertaining guests at Newark’s Carriages Café with his highly energetic presentation on how to enjoy life despite suffering from Depressive Disorder and PTSD.

With so many people today suffering from these conditions, Captain Krankypants will be sharing the story of his own journey, from a life of inner turmoil, stress, unhappiness, displeasure, annoyance, anger and distrust to a new life of self-awareness, acceptance, trust and hopefully happiness.

“After more than 30 years in the work force and 19 years in the military, including multiple tours to battle zones, Trace has a wealth of experiences that combine to provide a unique outlook on life,” said Wendy Baird, owner of Carriages.

“We’re delighted to welcome him to Newark for what promises to be a very special evening. His personal take on what is obviously a very serious topic is guaranteed to provoke laughter and tears in equal measure and give hope to those who have suffered or are suffering from depression themselves.”

Award-winning black comedy comes to Averham

Brush off the winter blues with an evening of black comedy at the Robin Hood Theatre, Averham’s beautiful 150-seat Victorian gem!

Following the sell-out success of A Christmas Carol in December, God of Carnage tells the tale of two couples who meet to talk about a playground incident in which Alan and Annette’s son has hit Michael and Veronica’s son in the face, breaking two of his teeth.

As the night wears on and drinks are imbibed, what begins as a civil discussion soon sees the couples sparring against other. But before long the men gang up on the women and the spouses switch sides as the fighting continues.

Yasmina Reza‘s ‘very funny tragedy’ was written originally in French and later translated into English for Broadway and West End productions. In 2008, its UK premiere with Ralph Fiennes, Tasmin Greig, Janet McTeer and Ken Stott received the Tony Award for best play of the year; four years later, when Kate Winslett and Jodie Foster starred in the Roman Polanski film, it earned the description of a ‘joyously unpleasant film’.
