For goodness bake

Plenty of food for thought on this weekend’s show…

Fresh from the first ever Newark Vegan Festival on Saturday 16 February, Rachel will describing some of the goodies that were on sale in the Ballroom of the Town Hall.

She’ll have news too of her cookery demonstrations at 11am, 1pm and 3pm on the day – if you’re reading this before Saturday, there’s still time for you to go along and see her in action! – and hopefully there’ll be a few minutes in the first hour of the show for her to share at least one of her recipes.

Later on, Jill Hesketh will be joining the Girls Around Town to talk about her bread-making courses – and she’s promised to bring some of her goodies to the studio too…

Jill be telling June and Rachel why and how she started Bake It and Take It, offering one and two day courses which, as the name suggests, give those taking part the opportunity to bake their own bread and then take it home to enjoy!

With just two clients joining her for each session, there’s plenty of time get hands-on with the dough and – with Jill’s expert guidance – make several different breads, from a white tin loaf to an Italian foccacia.

Tune in or listen online between 10am and 12 noon on Sunday for all this and more, including news of Jill’s new half-day pizza and tapas making courses and her plans to add cake and pastry making classes to the menu later this year…

The taste of summer

Newark’s best-known foodie makes a welcome return to the studio next weekend to share some of her favourite seasonal recipes with the Girls Around Town.

Lisa Holloway will be bringing June up to date with what’s she’s been doing since moving on to pastures new after selling Compton House, her award-winning B&B.

As for those recipes, she’s keeping the details under wraps until the show. So you’ll have to tune in or listen online between 10am and 12 noon on Sunday to find out just what’s on the menu.

Will it be pasta or puds, barbecues or brunches? Whatever she chooses, one thing’s for sure; the dishes Lisa will be sharing will be delicious, easy to make and guaranteed to bring a taste of summer to the table.

Anyone for seconds? Keep an eye on the GAT Facebook page for a link to the online podcast and watch this space for the recipes coming soon – just in time for you to serve up some tasty treats to your own families and friends…

Food for thought

You’ve almost certainly heard of foodbanks – perhaps you’ve even donated food or household products at a collection point located in one of the shops or churches in or around the town…

But how much do you really know about the work done by the volunteers who run and staff the Newark Foodbank?

One of those volunteers, Jenni Harding, joins the Girls Around Town on this week’s show to explain why, when and where the Newark Foodbank first opened its doors and how it’s grown since then.

Find out how the tinned, long-life, packet and non-perishable foodstuffs, basic toiletries and baby needs donated by the local community are helping to change the lives of single people, couples and families who, for a myriad of different reasons, find themselves short of money and in a crisis situation.

Tune in or listen online from 10am to 12 noon  on Sunday when there’ll be more food for thought from Rachel and Rosalyn as they share some of their own recipes for simple, nutritious meals.

And, if you miss the show, don’t forget to keep an eye on the GAT Facebook page for the link to the podcast early the following week…
