Catching up with Carriages

Time for another catch up on Girls Around Town next weekend, when Wendy Baird and Suzie Jones join June and Rachel to share some of the highlights of the nine months that have flown by since Carriages Café first opened its doors in Newark last August…

Nominated in the Best New Venue category of the prestigious Nottinghamshire Food & Drinks Awards for 2018 (watch this space for details of when and how to vote later in the year!), Carriages has quickly become a popular spot for meetings, leisurely lunches and afternoon teas, as well as the perfect place to grab a takeaway coffee and snack while waiting for a train.

It’s also been home to wide range of events, with cupcakes on Valentine’s Day, a Christmas Fair and a Syrian-themed evening just a small sample of what’s been on the menu recently. And its Community Café is now a firm favourite with customers who want to meet old friends and make new ones while enjoying a three-course meal for just £3 every Wednesday evening and – if they wish – give others the chance to eat or drink free at Carriages by taking part in the Pay It Forward scheme.

Tune in or listen online between 10am and 12 noon on Sunday for news too of  what’s in store for the months to come – including Carriages‘ involvement in the Newark Book Festival and in the Newark line-up of this year’s Open Studios Notts, when visitors will be able to see Suzie working in situ on one of her whimsical pieces of artwork…

Spilling the beans

Do you remember the Swinging Sixties? Maybe not – but perhaps you’re still a fan of Sixties music?

Either way, the name Frank Ifield is sure to strike a chord – the first UK-based pop star to have three consecutive number one hits, beginning with I Remember You in July 1962 which was also the first disc to sell a million copies in the UK alone…

This weekend, ex-showbiz journalist Graham Keal returns to Girls Around Town to explain why and how he made it his mission to bring one of his own 60s idols to Newark on Tuesday 22 May.

“As a pop-mad 12-year old back then, Frank was a huge star to me,” says Graham. “And he still was when I interviewed him 20 years later during my time as TV editor of the Northants Evening Telegraph.

“When I saw on his website that his 2018 UK tour didn’t include any dates in the East Midlands, I contacted his agent and agreed to organise a Frank Ifields Spills The Beans dinner if a suitable venue could be found.”

Graham will be in the studio on Sunday to describe how he set the search in motion and just what’s in store for the 40 diners at Carriages Café, where Frank will be ‘spilling the beans’ about lots of behind-the-scenes stories from the Swinging Sixties.

Tune in to 107.8FM or DAB digital radio or listen online between 10am and 12 noon – with a little bit of luck, June might even be able to persuade him to drop one or two hints about some of the tales Frank has to tell!

Try a taste of Syria

If you’ve never sampled the traditional food of Syria, a fund-raising  event at Carriages Café on Thursday 23 November is an ideal opportunity not only to do just that but to support two good causes as well…

Six Syrian families have recently settled in Newark, most of them after spending five years as refugees in Lebanon. Now two of the families have plans to open a catering business in the town and they will be introducing guests to the delicious cuisine of their homeland during the evening, when the families will also be sharing some of their unforgettable stories.

Tickets for A Taste of Syria, which starts at 7.30pm, are £20 each and the proceeds of the evening will be divided between Newark Homestart (who are supporting the women and young children by providing volunteer support) and a charity working on the ground in Syria to help those who are still suffering there and in the refugee camps.
