Ain’t no mountain high enough

everest base campOr so it seems for Kathryn Mays, who’s just a month away from the ultimate challenge…

On Thursday 24 April, she’ll be leaving behind her ‘day job’ as a credit controller for luxury hotels around the world to begin a gruelling trek from Nepal to Everest Base Camp in support of Newark Women’s Aid.

“It’s one of the greatest treks in the world and I can’t wait to take on the 17-day high altitude challenge,” says Kathryn. “Nothing about this trip is going to be luxurious but I’m pretty sure we’ll be treated to some 5-star views and an unforgettable experience.”

After a breathtaking flight to Lukla, Kathryn and her fellow trekkers will steadily ascend through mountain villages, taking in the fantastic Everest scenery. En route, they’ll encounter the enormity of the Khumbu glacier before eventually reaching Gorak Shep, the final stop before heading to Everest Base Camp itself.

“It’s also our base for the pre-dawn ascent of Kala Patthar the following morning, the highest point on the trek with close-up views of the summit of Mount Everest,” she says.

team mays“I know the trip is going to be tough, both mentally and physically. But I’ve climbed mountains to get where I am today, as have my two children. NWA supported us all back in 2005; they do an amazing job offering support to victims of domestic violence and a safe place to stay in the refuge.”

Kathryn’s fundraising events so far have netted almost £6,000 for the Newark-based charity which offers what she describes as ‘a lifeline service helping to rebuild lives’. To support her with your donation, visit https://mydonate.bt.com/fundraisers/mays
