The inside story

The brochures are on their way from the printer – the tickets will be on sale any day now – could there possibly be a better time to find out what’s in store when the 2018 Newark Book Festival comes to town?

Festival organiser Sara Bullimore will be in the studio with June and Rachel next Sunday to talk about the exciting programme she’s been busy planning for the weekend of Friday 13 to Sunday 15 July.

And if the success of last year’s event is anything to go by, Newark will be buzzing when venues across the town join forces again for another celebration of books, authors and the word.

Featuring everything from author events, panels and workshops to crime and contemporary fiction, history and activities for children, this year’s theme is Landscapes in Literature. With both ticketed and free events on offer, there’ll be something for everyone in a programme that’s designed to challenge and inspire you and, above all, to fire your imagination…

Tune in or listen online from 10am to 12 noon on Sunday to get the inside story from Sara when she joins the Girls Around Town to share everything you need to know about the what, the where and the when.

And, of course, about how you can join in this celebration of the very best in literature and the arts too!

Making things beautiful and making beautiful things

Believe it or not, it’s been five months since Tina Bettison relinquished her role as a presenter on Girls Around Town to open her new studio and gallery in Southwell – goodness, how time flies!

But she didn’t take much persuading to return to Radio Newark for next weekend’s show, when she’ll be talking about how a series of workshops, exhibitions and demonstrations has already put BELOVED@THEBARN firmly on the map with customers and fellow creatives alike.

Tina will be joining June on Sunday to explain how what she calls ‘this wee corner of the world’ combines contemporary art, homewares with history and creative space. And how it was born from love and from her love of making beautiful things and making things beautiful…

There’ll be news too of some of the activities and events in store at The Barn for spring and summer, including details of the Southwell Studios Trail, part of the Open Studios Notts programme in May and June.

Tune in on 107.8fm or on DAB digital radio or listen online from 10am to 12 noon on Sunday to find out why, in Tina’s own words, ‘BELOVED@THEBARN isn’t just a place, it’s a community’…

Summer inspiration

If you’re looking for a new challenge for summer, the chance to take an existing skill to another level or even try something completely different, next weekend’s show just might give you the inspiration you need…

Girls Around Town‘s former wellbeing guru Fiona Theokritoff will be back in the studio on Sunday morning, talking to June about her role as a Community Learning Tutor with Inspire and sharing details of what’s on offer over the coming months.

Wherever you are on your personal learning journey, whether you’re interested in trying new things, becoming healthier or simply getting out and about more and meeting new people, you’ll find plenty to choose from in the Inspire range of courses and workshops.

Take your pick – from blogging or budgeting to creative writing or crochet, first aid or family history to patchwork or poetry, to name just a few, there’s something for everyone in libraries across Nottinghamshire this summer.

There’ll be news too of Fiona’s involvement in both the Lowdham Book Festival in June and the Newark Book Festival in July, together with dates for more of the popular Wine and Words evenings she leads with fellow writer Jane Wyles at Gannets in Newark.

Tune in or listen online from 10am to 12 noon next Sunday to find out why 9,035 people took part in Inspire courses last year – and how you can develop your own skills by following their example this year!
