Local aromatherapist supporting Aromatherapy Awareness Week

julie payneThe theme of this year’s Aromatherapy Awareness Week, from 9 to 15 June, is the beneficial effects of clinical aromatherapy on back pain.

To raise the awareness of the many benefits of aromatherapy in Newark, local aromatherapist Julie Payne will be offering 20 per cent discounts on all aromatherapy treatment for the week at her therapy room in Elston.

The International Federation of Aromatherapists, which co-ordinates Aromatherapy Awareness Week, was prompted to use back pain as its theme this year after discovering the alarming statistics that one in six people are affected by back pain in this country and that it is responsible for approximately 7.6 million lost working days per year.

Julie has a been a registered IFA aromatherapist for two years and has been successfully running her therapy business, Naturally Tip To Toe Therapy, for the last seven years. She works from her home clinic and has treated many clients with back pain and its associated health problems, such as lack of sleep, fatigue and tension headaches, and thoroughly enjoys helping them on the road to recovery.

The therapeutic benefits of essential oils have been known since ancient times and they have been successfully used by health practitioners in other European countries since the early 20th century. Since 1985 the International Federation of Aromatherapists has been involved in research in the UK and has a strong body of evidence on the therapeutic benefits of clinical aromatherapy on back pain and its associated health problems.

Visit Julie’s website for more details – and look out for more information about Julie and her therapies in the next issue of Around Town magazine.

A sweet treat for the Girls Around Town

cupcakesThe Big Newark Bake Off returns next month and this is one local event the Girls Around Town won’t be missing…

June, Tina and Sue didn’t need any persuading at all to join the panel of judges for this year’s competition, which takes place in The Buttermarket on Saturday 21 June. Let’s face it, who wouldn’t leap at the chance to taste all the entries in the Chocolate Cake category?!

This year, amateur bakers from across the area are being invited to showcase their skills in 10 different categories. The first four are for juniors aged 14 and under

  • A decorated gingerbread man (for 8s and under)
  • 3 decorated cupcakes with the theme of Fairy Tales
  • 3 cheese scones
  • Fridge cake (4 squares)

For seniors (15-plus), the categories are

  • 3 decorated cupcakes with the theme of Films

  • Chocolate cake
  • Loaf of bread
  • Newark biscuit
  • Victoria sandwich

And, for anyone who sell cakes to the public, the final category is

  • The Professional Cake Decorators Showcase, judged on decoration only and on the theme of Summer Time

Entry to the competition is free but all entries must be pre-registered by midnight on Wednesday 18 June. Enter online or get your entry form in the Newark Advertiser, from Advertiser reception or at One Stop Cake Shop on Baldertongate.

Judging takes place in The Buttermarket between 11.45am and 2pm – there are trophies for the overall winner of the Junior and Senior classes, with prize cards and rosettes for the first three in each category – and the Girls Around Town can’t wait to dive into all that chocolate!
