Wine and Words returns to Newark Book Festival

With the 2019 Newark Book Festival just days away now, the spotlight’s on one of its opening events during the second hour of this week’s Girls Around Town.

As the three-day Festival weekend gets underway, local poets Fiona Theokritoff and Jane Wyles will be returning to Carriages Café for another of their ever-popular Wine and Words evenings.

They’ll be joining June and Rachel on Sunday morning with news of what’s in store for guests on Friday 12 July– two lively, fun-filled hours featuring poems from their own repertoire and the work of others, a chance to try poetry bingo and get involved in creating an audience poem – and, of course, there will be wine!

Tickets for Festival Wine and Words – which can be purchased from Carriages Café at Newark Castle Station or by calling 01636 676129 – are £10 each, with nibbles and a glass of Bucks Fizz or OJ on arrival included in the price. Further drinks can be purchased at the bar and parking for guests is free from 6pm.

Tune in or listen online from 10am to 12 noon when Fiona and Jane will be sharing more details about the evening, which starts at 7pm.

And if you’re wondering just what poetry bingo is, now’s your chance to find out!

Written from the heart

Up and coming musician and poet Michaela Woods joins the Girls Around Town this weekend with a sneak preview of her debut album and second poetry book, both due to be released later this year.

Newark-based Michaela – who performs as Wilted Flower – will be at Stray’s Coffee Shop on Saturday 21 September, when she’ll be playing the new album in full and doing a selection of readings from the book, Grow in the Dark.

Her melodic, stripped-back performances reflect on experiences in her life to create honest and raw songs about mental health issues, loss and love which she likens to those of Keaton Henson and Daughter.

The new book follows on from her first collection of poems, No Longer A Wordless Book, published in October 2017 and described by one reviewer as ‘a truly emotional collection of poems written from the heart’.

Tune in or listen online between 10am and 12 noon on Sunday when Michaela will be talking to June and Rosalyn about the inspiration behind her music and poetry which she says are ‘a look inside my heart and head’.

And sharing one of the tracks from her album with everyone…

From fiction to fizz

Two guests on Girls Around Town again this Sunday, both talking about events coming to Newark next month.

First up, it’s best-selling author Sarah Ward who returns to Newark Book Festival on Saturday 13 July to join the panel of writers taking part in Hull Noir Presents Crime Around The World.

Chaired by Nick Quantrill, the panel will be taking its audience on an international crime spree from India, Mexico, Texas and Japan to Russia, France and West Germany.

And in Sarah’s case, bringing them even closer to home…

Her four novels – In Bitter Chill, A Deadly Thaw, A Patient Fury and The Shrouded Path – are all set in the Derbyshire Peak District where she lives and each one features investigations involving DC Connie Childs.

In the first hour of the show, Sarah will be talking to June and Rachel about what brought her to the world of crime fiction, the talks she gives to reading groups and the workshops she runs for budding authors, as well as sharing news of her next book.

Moving from fiction to fizz, Cheryl Day from Newark Live at Home will be in the studio from 11am to invite listeners to enjoy a bit of a mid-week treat.

Prosecco, pizza and pudding – what more could you ask for on a summer’s evening?

Well, how about a bit of shopping thrown in for good measure, along with the chance to help raise money for a local charity too?

It all comes together from 6.30pm to 8.30pm on Thursday 18 July, when Southwell & Newark Live at Home join forces to bring the Prosecco, Pizza and Pudding fundraiser to Aura Business Centre on Manners Road in Newark.

As well as sharing more details of the event, Cheryl will be describing how Live at Home groups – part of the award-winning charity MHA that has been helping to improve the lives of over 18,000 older people across Britain for more than 75 years – run a variety of social activities for people aged 55 and over, with lunch clubs, assisted shopping, dance and exercise classes, outings and holidays just a few things on offer.

Tune in or listen online from 10am to 12 noon to hear what Sarah and Cheryl have to say and find out how to book your tickets for these two events.
