Blues and loos

No guests on the show next weekend – more by accident than design – but that just means June and Rosalyn will have plenty of time to catch up and explore a few interesting topics.

For example, did you know that according to an on-going global survey over 200,000 people have voted for blue as their favourite colour?

That until the middle of the 19th century, almost all public loos were designed for men?

Or that research has recently shown the 1880s to be the happiest time by far in British history? Mind you, it’s not quite clear whether the introduction of the first public loos for ladies played any part in that surge in happiness…

Running for REACH

Can you believe more than a year has passed since Sarah Cobb joined the Girls Around Town to talk about the first ever Santa Run in aid of local charity Reach?

The good news is the event was so successful it’s back again soon – and Sarah’s back too, in the studio next weekend with all the details you need to know about this very festive fundraiser!

But before she turns your attention to the second Santa Run that’s coming up on Sunday 1 December, she’ll be casting her mind back to 2018, updating June and Rachel on how things went when runners of all ages and abilities joined in the fun at Newark‘s Sconce & Devon Park…

Hopefully what she has to say will fire you with enthusiasm to get involved in this year’s event and run, jog or walk round the two mile course to help raise much-needed funds for Reach.

The run starts at 11am and there’s a mince pie, a medal and a free Santa suit or hat for all the participants. And if you accessorise your outfit, you could be in with a chance to win a prize in one of three categories, for the best adult’s fancy dress, best child’s fancy dress and best dog’s fancy dress!

Places are limited so you need to register soon – check out all the details of this family-friendly event online here and make sure you act fast to take advantage of the Early Bird prices which are available until 11pm on Thursday 31 October.

Be a tourist in your own town

How well do you know the town where you live?

When you’re planning a day out with friends or family, do you tend to overlook the things right there on your doorstep?

If you’re a regular listener, you’ll know that Radio Newark has been running its Love Where You Live campaign throughout 2019, highlighting some of the businesses, shops and attractions that make this part of Nottinghamshire so special.

Now, assisted by local experts, the Girls Around Town are homing in on some of the things the area has to offer – and where better to start than right on their own doorstep, in and around Newark?

In the first hour of next Sunday‘s show, June and Rachel will be taking a quick virtual tour of some of the jewels in Newark’s crown.

Then, with a little help from guest Sophie Farrell, they’ll be finding out about another outstanding spot nearby which might not be quite so familiar to you…

As marketing and communications manager for the National Holocaust Centre and Museum in Laxton, Sophie will talking about some of the attractions of this small village to the north of the county, known far and wide as the only remaining working “open field” farming village in Europe still operating this ancient system.

And of course she’ll have lots to say about the National Holocaust Centre, from its foundation in the 1990s and its permanent exhibitions to its extensive education programme and some of the conferences and other events which will be taking place over the coming months.
