United against violence against women

On last weekend’s show, you’ll no doubt have heard June talking about the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, which took place on  Wednesday 25 November.

Since that date, 16 days of action have been taking place, one of which will be held right here in Newark next week.

Commemorating the 108 women killed by men in the UK since 25 November 2019, 108 pairs of women’s shoes will go on display in the Market Place at 8am on Wednesday 9 December. The names of those women, who can no longer see the sunrise or be there for their families and friends, will be read out and the event will of course be captured in photographs.

If you’d like to help mark this, it’s not too late to donate a pair of women’s shoes which, after the event, will either be given to a local charity or returned to the donor.

All you need to do is drop off the shoes at Carriages Café between 9am and 6pm on Friday 4 December – if you want your shoes returned, just make sure they are clearly marked with your name on stickers on the soles.

Meet the artists online

For some years now, the months of May and June have been widely known as the time when artists from across Nottinghamshire join forces to bring a very special event to the county.

Open Studios Notts in its usual form obviously wasn’t an option for 2020 but that didn’t stop all those artists coming together – virtually of course! – to bring the event to the audience it would normally attract.

Instead of inviting people to join them in their studios, they’ve been inviting them to join them online. And in the last couple of months, they’ve made no fewer than 47 videos to make this possible.

Here’s just one of them, featuring former Girls Around Town presenter Tina Bettison. in which she talks to six of the artists taking part. this year…

Find out what they had to say to Tina about their work – and if you want to see and hear more, just follow this link to watch some of the other 46 videos uploaded to YouTube!
