Pick of the pets

Do you have a dog that bears an uncanny resemblance to you? A cute cat maybe or a pet with a penchant for fancy dress?

Then Reach Learning Disability wants to hear from you and, more importantly, wants to see your photographs of them…

The Nottinghamshire charity is hosting its first ever Virtual Pet and Wildlife Show and inviting entries in seven different categories

  • Pet that looks most like its owner
  • Best action shot (pet or wildlife)
  • Best fancy dress
  • Funny photo (pet or wildlife)
  • Cutest animal (pet or wildlife)
  • Best wildlife shot
  • In loving memory (a non-competitive category)

All photos must be your own, created by you and not by a professional – no Photoshopping please! – and must be submitted by 12 noon on Friday 5 June.

They’ll be uploaded to the charity’s Facebook page on Monday 8 June, when voting will begin. The winner in each category will be the one with the most ‘likes’ and the results will be announced on Tuesday 16 June.

You’ll pay just £2 per entry into each class and all funds raised will go towards helping Reach support people with disabilities across the county.

Bringing artists into view

Their studios may be closed to the public right now but artists across Nottinghamshire will still be welcoming ‘visitors’ throughout May and June, thanks to a special initiative designed to bring Open Studios 2020 to the county ‘virtually’.

“Of course it is no longer possible to run Open Studios in its usual format this year,” said Michael Trueman, co-ordinator of the initiative. “However, the creative community is the best at keeping morale high when times are rough, not only for the wider public but for ourselves too.

“Hence we have decided to use the online and digital opportunities available to continue to fulfil our mission of ‘bringing artists into view’.”

OS Notts will be sharing virtual studio tours and videos of artists’ work in progress on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter and on a dedicated YouTube channel. There will also be opportunities to meet participating artists on social media and a new Meet the Artist section on the OS website.

Linked photographic exhibitions showing artists and makers at work that would normally be held in libraries across the county courtesy of  Inspire: Culture, Learning and Libraries will also take place online.

Links to the exhibition, which launches on Friday 24 April, will be posted on social media and on the OS website. For the third year running, the photographs have been taken by Neil Pledger and curated by Lucianna Gallucci.

Discovering Bingham

In the first of a series of shows about how to Be a tourist in your own town, a couple of months ago June and Rachel took a closer look at a few of the attractions Newark has to offer.

You’ll probably remember the premise – how easy it is to overlook the things right on your doorstep when planning days out with friends and family.

Well, next weekend it’s time to focus on another Nottinghamshire treasure, just a few miles up the road…

And who better to point June – and you! – in the right direction than Ophelia Marshall, the founder of Rural Retail, with a little help from the Girls Around Town‘s new guest presenter Claire?

They’ll be explaining what it is they love about living and working in the pretty little town of Bingham and sharing details of some of the things that just might tempt you to head over there for a visit.

Voted The Best Place To Bring Up A Family a few years ago, Bingham is just nine miles away from both Nottingham and Newark, is easy to reach by train or car and has held a market charter since 1341.

These days, regular markets and farmers markets are held alongside The Buttercross in the town centre and Ophelia will be describing some of the things you’ll find among its stalls and in the shops nearby.

And with attractions such as Langar‘s Naturescape Wildflower Farm and the 16th century Holme Pierrepont Hall just a stone’s throw away, the surrounding area offers plenty of choice if you’re looking for a family day out, whether you want to explore 70 acres of meadow and woodland walks or step back in time to the days of the Tudors and the English Civil War.
