Party with the Pod!

flower pod bouquetIf you were listening in on Saturday 16 May, you’ll have heard Anna Joyce talking to the Girls Around Town about the excellent work done with adults with learning disabilities across Nottinghamshire by the charity Reach Learning Disability.

Later this month, they’re holding two events at the Flower Pod in Southwell, the social enterprise developed to help raise funds for the charity.

Both take place on Saturday 20 June at Home Farm, Brackenhurst Lane, Southwell and they’d love it if you could join them for one – or even both! – of them.

From 10.30am to 4pm, it’s the Flower Pod Open Day – find out what Reach is all about, refresh yourself in the pop up café and enjoy a leisurely wander around this beautiful spot.

Tickets are £3 each and are available in advance or you can just pay on the day.

Or why not party with the Pod? Their Midsummer Party starts at 7pm and continues till late, with three-course supper, licensed bar, live music and a comedian all included in the £25 ticket price.

Tickets for both events are available from Reach, Prebend Passage, Southwell or by calling 01636 819066 – and you can also pick up a ticket for the Midsummer Party from Burleys on King Street in Southwell.

Real stories, real women and a great night out

A brand new comedy about dating, men and finding Mr Right comes to Newark Palace Theatre this summer.

Sex in Suburbia will make you laugh and cry in equal measure – and with plenty of sensational songs such as I’m Every Woman, I Want To Break Free and Somebody Else’s Guy, you’ll probably find yourself dancing in the aisles too…

Claire Sweeney stars as Penny Crowe, the host of a late-night radio phone-in. As Britain’s leading Agony Aunt, she takes calls about every date from hell and the occasional one from heaven. She’s more than happy to dish out relationship advice, but is she as happy to take it…?

Co-written by Claire and based on real stories from real women – just like Girls Around Town, of course – this is the story of all our lives!

Tickets for the show, at 7.30pm on Sunday 24 May, are £22.50 (concessions £21.50, Friends of the Palace £21) and are available from the theatre on Appletongate in Newark or online here

O come all ye faithful…

community carols 3…To Newark Market Place, where you’ll find everything from carols and choirs to Santas and shopping on Sunday 14 December…

The festive fun begins at 10am, when local traders set out their wares for the Christmas Market. Bag a bargain or two, find fabulous gifts and treats for family and friends – and even have them wrapped in The Buttermarket.

community carols 1Then get right into the spirit of Christmas at 11am, as the Newark Town Band and local school choirs join forces for the Community Carol Concert. There’ll be plenty of opportunities for audience participation and the choir of Newark Business Club will be there too, singing their own unique version of The 12 Days of Christmas

No celebration of Christmas would be complete without Santa, of course. Or in this case lots of Santas, as local residents of all ages take part in the charity Santa Dash, racing around the Market Place to raise money for Beaumond House.

community carols 2The children’s dash starts at 12 noon, it’s ready, set, go for adults at 12.45pm and if you fancy taking part yourself, there’s still time to register – just follow this link, sign up and start fundraising.

And in case you need an extra incentive to join in the fun, it’s just been announced that parking in Tolney Lane car parks will be FREE on Sunday 14 December (and on Saturday 13, Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 December too)…
