Girls’ night out!

Starting the year as they mean to go on, albeit a little belatedly, Girls Around Town hosts June and Rosalyn were doing exactly what it says on the tin when they joined artists and art-lovers at Meander and Mooch in Newark last Friday evening…

In the first of (hopefully!) many opportunities to enjoy getting out and about around town in 2020, they were among the guests invited to the pre-launch Private View of the gallery’s latest exhibition, The Wall.

The show’s new business guru Cathie Babbington joined the party- regular GAT guest Janice Holmes popped in for  a while – and there were plenty of other familiar faces among those raising a glass to celebrate with gallery owners Susi and Neil Wright too.

In addition to showcasing the work of 20 top artists, sculptors and jewellery-makers from across the UK, the three-week exhibition will be raising money for one of Newark’s best-loved charities, Beaumond House Community Hospice.

Local businesses have joined forces to show their support by sponsoring ‘bricks’ on display in one of the windows – next time you’re passing, see if you can spot the Girls Around Town’s own brick in the wall…

In fact, don’t just pass! The gallery on Cartergate is open seven days a week till the exhibition comes to a close on Friday 28 February and admission is free.

So why not drop in and have a meander and mooch around the work on display while you’re in town?

Wall to wall talent

Twenty of the UK‘s top artists will be joining forces to showcase their work when Meander and Mooch brings a unique new exhibition to Newark next month…

After a private view and launch party on Friday 7 February, The Wall opens to the public at 10am on Saturday 8 February, when visitors will be able to meet some of the artists as they explore what’s on show in the gallery.

One of those whose paintings are featured is the aptly-named Jackie Whall, who together with gallery owner Susi Wright joins the Girls Around Town next weekend to talk about the three-week event and some of the stories behind it.

“Our aim is to take people on a journey through walls in history and music, from the Berlin Wall to Bowie‘s Heroes and Pink Floyd‘s unforgettable film and music The Wall,” says Susi.

“And if you’re a fan of Pink Floyd, there’s another treat in store for you in Newark too, with tribute band Think Floyd performing the music from The Wall at the Palace Theatre on the evening of Friday 7 February.

“No prizes for guessing where we’ll be headed after our own launch party!”

“We’ll be raising money for Beaumond House Community Hospice and, for a small donation, visitors will be able to write their own message to a loved one on the wall in the gallery window to help support this worthwhile charity,” adds Susi.

Back to the drawing board

Six months ago, Marie Elizabeth Edwards joined the Girls Around Town to talk about helping local businesses stand out from the crowd by designing and producing bold and beautiful signage for them.

It’s back to the drawing board this weekend when she’s in the studio again to tell Rosalyn and Rachel a little more about how she turned a hobby into a thriving business of her own.

And how, through a range of other creations Made By Mee, she brings a uniquely personal touch to special celebrations such as weddings, christenings and Christmas…

On her previous visit to Radio Newark, Marie was about to host the first meeting of a new local branch of the Mums in Business Association. Since then, the group has gone from strength to strength and she’ll have news of the events that have taken place so far and, of course, what’s next on the agenda for working mothers in area.

And there’s more! Last month, she was a member of Carrie’s Babes, one of 27 teams taking part in the Dragon Boat Festival here in Newark. Find out how the babes prepared for the big event, how things went for them on the day – and above all, how delighted they were to be crowned top team on the sponsorship front, raising over £1,700 for two of Newark’s best-loved charities!
