Kids’ stuff

It’s all about kids on Girls Around Town this weekend…

Not June‘s specialist subject by any stretch of the imagination but luckily she knows a few local ladies who are definitely experts in this field!

Joining her on the phone in the second hour of the show is the co-owner of one of Newark‘s newest small businesses, Cate Martin from BeanBlock Café.

There’s  no shortage of great independent coffee shops in the town, of course, but if you’re a mum (or even a dad!) you’ll definitely want to hear what she has to say about the range of children’s activities hers has to offer.

And how giving Buggy Buddies a go? A chance to get out of the house and meet other mums while enjoying a socially-distanced walk, this regular event could be just what you’re looking for too.

Make sure you’re listening in from 11.20am on Sunday to catch what Cate has to say – and don’t miss the first hour of the show either, because there’s more specially for parents then.

June will be sharing all the details of Claire‘s latest course, Back to School – Positively! – which runs from Monday 24 to Friday 28 August.

Whether your children are looking forward to returning, have some slight niggles or are full-on hating the idea of being separated from you, this course will help them to see the benefits of school and give them some coping mechanisms for if they wobble.

Tune in to 107.8FM or listen online between 10am and 12 noon for all this and more on the show that brings you the very best local news, views and interviews every Sunday morning.

It’s show time!

Back in 2018, Andy Tudbury joined the Girls Around Town to talk about a brand new event he was bringing to one of the best-known venues in the region.

Set in the stunning grounds of Belvoir Castle, the first Belvoir Castle Flower and Garden Show took place in July that year, bringing together a range of show gardens from award-winning designers, a host of well-known nursery and floral exhibitors in the grand Lakeside Pavilion, a Gardeners’ Question Time panel and an educational area.

One year later, almost to the day, the festival was back bigger and better than before and until a few months ago Andy was busy preparing for more of the same this July.

Needless to say, that wasn’t to be under the current circumstances but Andy’s back with some good news when he joins June by phone this weekend – the show will go on in just a few weeks’ time…

Tune in to 107.8FM or listen online from 11.20am on Sunday to find out what Andy has to say about what’s on the programme for this year’s show, now taking place on Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 September, and how to pre-book tickets to the event.

Make sure you stay tuned in till the end of the chat too because he’ll be sharing some exclusive news about 2021 – you’ll hear it first here on Girls Around Town!

Time for a sweet treat

If you were listening to the show earlier today, you’ll have heard Sue Jackson – now known as Sue The Cook – sharing the recipe for this sweet and simple dessert with June

What’s not to like about Chocolate Mousse, especially one with just five ingredients that takes only a few minutes to prepare, even though you’ll need the patience of a saint to wait for it to chill in the fridge?!

Whether it’s a sweet treat for the family or the perfect finishing touch to a meal with friends, here’s the recipe for you all to enjoy your own Chocolate Moment

Easy Chocolate Mousse

  • Servings: Makes 6 servings
  • Difficulty: easy
  • Print

Based on a recipe by James Martin

Ingredients

  • 200g dark chocolate broken into pieces
  • 3 large eggs, separated
  • 50g caster sugar
  • 120ml water
  • Cream to serve (if required)

Directions

  1. Place the chocolate and water in a bowl over a pan of simmering water, making sure the water in the pan doesn’t touch the bowl. Stir as the chocolate melts to combine the ingredients.
  2. When the chocolate is melted, remove the bowl from the pan and leave to cool slightly,
  3. Place the egg whites in a CLEAN large bowl with the sugar and whip until you have reached stiff peak stage.
  4. Stir the egg yolks into the cooled chocolate – you will see it thicken slightly.
  5. Fold the chocolate mixture into the egg white gently with a metal spoon.
  6. Pour into serving dishes and leave to set in the fridge for at least 2 hours.
  7. Serve with lightly whipped cream, your favourite soft fruit or anything else you fancy!
